Pods! Pods! Pods! My tank water has been a desert for a while since the new cycle. Today I saw tons of tiny pods floating around in there. I think this may have been due to the water change I did today. The flow in my fuge has been very slow and I think they've been building up in there. I think pouring water into there kicked a few out into the display. I was so happy to see life in the water again. Things are looking up. Also, I found a sample pack of Coral Frenzy today. I'm going to try this with my cylope-eze after the holidays. I'll be gone for a couple weeks, but I have a trusted friend checking in on the tank while I'm away. Not planning to let him feed. Just topping off the ATO and changing a small amour of water. I think it'll be okay while I'm away. Can't wait to see what things look like when I return.

Hello All,

My favorite LFS had some great deals going this weekend and I just couldn't pass it up. So, this Sunday I treated myself to some early holiday presents.

Numero Uno! La colonia de Magicians!

NewMagicians20101219.jpg

This rock had a couple of neat HHs on it. You can see what is perhaps a sponge on the bottom and on the reverse side of the rock are some porites.

I also picked up some SPS. I think perhaps a branching monti on the left and procillapora birds nest on the right. Though they might both be procillapora.

I also got a couple of cheap zoa frags. Day Trippers, Tub's Blue, and something I'm not sure of. More images of those later.

I thought I'd give the trumpet coral another try. This one glows like crazy!

Finally, I got a small Nassarius snail to aid in the cleanup of meatier stuff.

I'll post a new FTS once I figure out where everything will finally go.

Uh Oh..

I was just feeding my tank and saw some pointy legs of something poking out from the new rock that my Magicians are inhabiting. Looks like a have a monster of some sort. I hope it doesn't eat anything besides the food I put in there.

:D Probably a preditory shrimp of some sort. Perhaps a pistol or mantis. I'm judging this based on it staying out of the daylight.

Thanks am. I just wish they didn't come with a mantis. I'm interested in mantis and wouldn't mind so much, but I really like my new hermit crab. I hope it doesn't kill it. I'm thinking about trying to get it out tomorrow.

have you seen said shrimp out at all? how small is it? if its very small it could just be a large amphipod or something... what were the legs like? were they all jointed like an arthropod? or did they look like something else?

I like the magician colony the most (tho yours new SPS are awesome too) but dont you already have magician zoas? and porites might be semi photsynthetic. hopefully it will grow into the sunlight where it can get food :)

The other HH on the magician colony (purple blob) is either a sponge like you said or a tunicate. those two are very common but always look cool :)

Hi Newman! Thanks for stopping by. I always appreciate your input.

I haven't seen more than a quick shadow and some legs, but it was definitely not an amphipod. Unless it's a giant amphipod. That would be awesome though. The legs looked way bigger than my hermit crab and were black I think. Perhaps with white tips. I have the porties in the light. They look dead in the middle, but have signs of life around the edges. I hope it recovers. I was thinking that those might have been tunicates, but I'm think it's a sponge.

I put everything in it's place today and yesterday. The tank looks awesome now. Not a sign of a frag plug in there. Just a lot of superglue and putty. I'll post new picks later.

Update 2010.12.22

Hello All,

Many of you may have seen my recent purchases from Sunday. I put everything in its place between Monday and Tuesday. I'm finally happy with how the tank looks. I only have a couple frag plugs left and I'm hiding them behind the display now. I still haven't gotten a good look at whatever hitchhiker I picked up with my Magicians, but it either hasn't acclimated yet, or is entirely nocturnal. So far it hasn't killed anything that I'm aware of. Zim the blue eyed, white legged hermit crab is still about, and the snails are all in place. Here's a new full tank shot:

I used a better camera on this one. I also accidentally took an image with the flash on. I was about to discard it, but it gives an interesting perspective of the tank. This is about how it looks with the LEDs off and my office lights on.

Here are a few fun shots from above:

You can see that I mounted the procillapora SPS. I brought out the cone shaped rock that I had hiding in the back and put the green procillapora on top. I also mounted the new Tub's Blues and whatever else these are on the bottom with the white skirts.

CORALS!

Abovezoas20101221.jpg

Finally, when I went to the LFS, they were having a holiday sale event and even had a raffle. Check it out. I won! My prize was a refractometer made by Sybon. From what I've read on the internet, it seems like a good brand. It's solid and heavy! No plastic on this one. I can't wait to see it work. I've been using a Hydrometer. I'm curious to see what my salinity actually is.

I may add a tiny three stripe damsel after the new year. Gonna let the corals settle into place for a while first. Hopefully everything will be okay while I'm away for the holidays. I have someone checking in on the tank to refill the ATO and to do a small water change next week.

That is the refractometer that i got on intanks site. I have had really good luck with it and it is very accurate. The only issue i have is if im trying to check my salinity at night and im using a light as opposed to the sunlight it is not as clear. But thats it.

looks great. i like to see splashes of color stand out from all that blue/purple haze.

try to get back behind the tank's back wall and clean between that and the black background. theres some distracting salt there lol.

Thanks! Haha! I imagine one of those would have taken up the whole tank. Good luck in the contest BTW!

Thanks Newman. You're right about the salt on the back wall. I tried to take care of that once, but made a bigger mess. I'll try again and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Very nice additions...

Stick your finger in there to see if it's a mantis, I hear they like to be petted.

Thanks will46r! You're right, they do like to be petted.

lol np, my tank has the same issue. I wonder if its starting to get noticeable in my FTS shots..

haha, so we have one mantis that hates its owner and another that is either heavily sedated(or sick, who knows), or somehow "trusts" its owner enough to carry it around like that...yep i'm betting it was sick lol.
