Got a sweet deal on some trade in's over at GC Reef.

Picked up a YT

Some Duncans

And some Nukes.

Plus, I still have store credit left. Gotta Love GC...THANKS!!

Plans are in the works for switching to MH.

With some help from Glennr1978, I plan to use these (2) 150W 20K Radium in combination with 2 ULV Super Atinics...yes I like Blue....

I will be selling my 6x39W T5 36" modded fixture if this works out

You will love the radium. They are amazing! But, why are the bulbs so close together?

This is not the final mount, just how they came to me. I plan on mounting them with some space.

Why the switch to MH?

Trying something new. I got this setup for less than the cost of replacement T5 bulbs, so, no biggie.

See how it works out.

Like the yellow tang despite what the masses may say.

Tang Police up in Arms....lol

I love the sound of UPS...

Came today.

Any tips are welcome. Gonna spend a little time on Google..break-in tips, etc.

What was your final T5 light combo?

Right now there are:

3 ATI Blue +

2 stock atinics

1 75 / 25 i think it's a ULV or AquaSun but I can't see it.

I had and pulled a Fiji Purple and a GE (?) 50 / 50.

The 50/50 was too yellow for my taste and the Fiji a little red.

Also had a Blue Special... was too white.

Gonna give MH a try as I got the fixtures basically for free.

(2) 150W 20k Radium

(2) 36" / 39W T5

(2) 3" fans will run when lights are on

(1) 5" server fan to be used as "overheat control"

RLK 3 currently in use

I'm a little up in the air on how to mount the fans. After "overthinking" it for a few days, I think I'm going to mount the fans blowing in from the open back.

*opinions welcome*

sweet lighting setup. :)

But fans blowing in?

Most fixtures blow air out, sucking in from some other port (holes/screen area). I think its more efficient to pull air out? Anyone?

Yep,I've been mulling over this one. Blow air in from the back, or exhaust air from the top?

Doing it from the top or sides will mean extra work = drilling the holes, buying/mounting vents, etc.

I could go as planned and and have an exhaust vent, no fans in the top...just a "grill" or "vent" so to speak

Do you use the RKL's temperature control features? If you do (and you don't have a chiller), I would vent the hood with two fans pulling out, and then have the third fan pointed at the water surface and connected to the RKL's temperature controller function.

Just my 2cents

yes I do use the temp control feature. No chiller. Summer time it will kick in. I have another large fan currently in the canopy blowing over the water surface from the front to the open back and two small fans blowing in from the back that run when the lights are on. I know that the MH will produce more heat.

Perhaps mount all fans blowing in from the back and just a "central" vent in the top = simplistic solution.

I've thought of many ways to set this up and my brain is starting to hurt. That usually clues me to keep it simple....lol.

But opinions are still welcome. I'm in no huge rush.

What are you using to run the fans? I'm going to need to do the same thing very soon with a tank. The fans I have are gutted from an old PC.

dude, you're thinking about it too hard. Just throw 'em in there!

Thanks for the reality check Dude. I have a plan. Pics tomorrow.

Went by Altech (electronic superstore)...closed. Radio Shack had no solution unless I wanted do build from parts...whatever.

I just wanna chain a couple 3" fans and plug in to RKL...run with lights.

The server fan I already have plugs straight in.

Hopefully, I'll have it all done and posted tomorrow.

For now, I'm gonna stare at my new skimmer....sexiness...lol

Okey Dokey -

Got em in there. Two fans blowing out the top + the big fan that has always been there (bottom center).

Everything works. Got the timers set, hopefully correctly.

Just need a little cleanup on the wiring + install the moonlight + mount ballasts and all that crud...

The fans are daisy chained with 4 pin connectors. I found a 4 pin power pack that plugs in to a regular outlet buried in a drawer...knew I had one...Ya should be able to find something similar at a computer/electronic store. Wans't expensive if I remember correctly.

The large fan , you can barely see it in the front bottom, plugs directly into the RKL and is on temperature control function. It rarely ever came on with the 6x39 T5 (I have it set to activate @ 78.9). But, with the MH's..we shall see.

So we're all working correctly so far. I mounted two additional 120 fans in the back. So far so good.

Get a ~2 degree temp swing.

2x150W Radium 20K + 2x39W T5

ATI Blue + / ULV Super Atinic

The T5's are on 10am - 9pm

The MH's are on a four hour cycle with a one hour stagger.

This way i get the "morning light" thing and the sun "across the sky" thing. Looks way cool with half the tank lit by MH and the other half by T5.

Moonlight kicks on 10pm - 6am.

Before..all 6 T5's

FTS_March2010.jpg

After...both MH's + T5's

IMG_2705-Edit.jpg

Quite a dramatic difference in person.

very nice. interested to see how this one plays out. i recently made the transition to mh from 6x18 t5 over my 10 gallon. no im trying to figure out an actinic supplementation. im happy with the choice i made so far.

I tried the 2 ULV Super Atinics. Just by themselves, without the MH's on it's like a neon blue/ green..like a Lava Lamp nightmare....yak.

So, I now have one ULV and one ATI Blue+. It's still very blue, almost purple, but gives a nice contrast and a different look to the tank. With the MH's on a one hour stagger ( the sun across the sky thing) it looks VERY cool....half the tank llit by MH, the other half in a cool blue light.

I'll work on a video of the 24 hour cycle.
