HELP! S. haddoni- URGENT :(

:(:(:( Hi,

I purchased a very large S. haddoni anemone yesterday. The base is not lacerated and is attached to the substrate/rock in the tank. The tentacles are sticky and I fed it a little frozen food and pellets. The color is a blueish green.

However, the mouth has been open since I introduced it. Nothing comes out of the mouth (it did go the bathroom this morning), but you can see the white fleshy folds on the inside. The mouth is not inverted, but open.

Is this normal for the new anemone, or is it going to die??!!!

Tank specs:

36 gallon bowfront

196 watts PowerCompact Lighting (50/50)

1.026

0,0,0 ammonia nitrites, nitrates

Carbon running

Protein skimmer running

80 degrees

Please Help Me

There isnt much I can say except that S. haddoni is a difficult species to keep and you will likely need more lighting to keep it long-term.

Well, I bought some fresh squid and clams for it. As soon, as the fresh food hit the tentacles, the mouth closed up completely. However, it did not eat the squid or clams which I guess is not surprising. I am going to try some krill and/or silversides (if I can find them).

Now, the anemone looks perfect, but I hope that it stays this way.

Well, tonight the anemone did not eat his silversides (I guess that is a good thing^)!

When the lights went off, the anemone really opened his mouth and a lot of his white insides were out. After a while of seeing this, I got really nervous, so I turned the light on. I then stuck my hand in the tank.

When I felt the anemone, the tentacles were very very sticky and really grabbed my hand. The base is also very well stuck to the LR/sand. Then, all of a sudden the mouth completely closed to the point of being picture healthy perfect. I do not understand. Is this anemome supposed to do that at night, or is it insane?!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks

As I said before, I did NOT read the post until after I "fed" him. I left for work right after I wrote my last reply.

This is a very stressful time and I would appreciate help instead of unwanted/unearned negative replies.

Thanks

i think what they are trying to say is "leave it alone". see how it adjusts to the tank.

you just introduced it into a new environment. it may take many days to adjust or even a week or two. it needs to find the optimal spot for light and flow (hopefully it exists in the tank).

if you keep touching or trying to feed it, it only stresses it more (they're passive hunters, hence why they supplement with photosynthesis).

just maintain pristine water and make sure nothing bothers it. it should find its "sweet spot" in the tank. if you notice it wandering too much and/or staying a wanderer after a week, then i'd look into re-aquascaping to give it whatever it needs (flow or lighting or maybe both). hth

It has plopped and attached to the spot that I added it to (just moved to the right a little). I do have a 5 inch saddleback clown that is hosting it right now. Is that too stressfull for the anemone? What should I do if it is.

From now on, I will not touch the anemone!

Give it some time to adjust. Its been taken from one place and put into another. And some strange creature that it doesnt know is trying to hang on it. Try not to stress. Right now, the less you do with it, the better.

This morning the anemone was plump and happy, but now it is all droopy again and the mouth is wide open with a lot of the white insides spilling out again. It also pooped more.

Why is it doing this??

The tentacles are still sticky/moving all around and the base is still firmly planted.

Its FINE! lol. Chill out, mine did the very same thing, still sometimes it inverts its mouth, if its attached, leave it alone. Dont feed it anything, if the clown is hosting it, then the clown will feed it. The more you try to feed it the worse off your water gets and thats more likely to kill the anemone than anything. They require prestine water conditions.

Also if is starting to die there will be nothing you can do, just leave it be and let you clown take care of it. The poop is also probally the zoanthelle so I am sure its stressed but it will take time to settle down. Did you acclimate properly? HTH

I acclimated it for 3 hours and the salinity, pH, and temp were the same when I released it from the bag.

It is nice to know that your carpet experienced/performed these traits upon introduction into your tank as well.

When should I begin to feed it the silversides?

I do not believe it is expelling the zooxanthellae as it is not stringy, but quite large spherical matter coming out.

It was not/is not breaking up and is not greyish-green in matter and it is not stringy. It is definitley on an extended bathroom break.

The mouth has closed up a little, but it is really deflated/droopy, but I have read/seen that this is normal as far as cleaning itself out.

I bought the anemone on Friday night, so it is only on its' second day in the tank. Hopefully, by the end of this week it will be okay.

Now with the lights out tonight, the anemone is completely inflated, mouth shut and looking really nicely. It is also hosting the saddle wonderfully. What does this signify? Are my lights too strong for it?

lol just the way they are. Mine does the WERIDEST stuff. I mean totally deflates, looks DEAD, mouth wide open, and my female picasso puts her WHOLE HEAD down in the mouth and vibrates. Then few hours later its looking fine again. Weird stuff. Seems very happy thou, doesnt move at all and opens nicely during the day. I havent fed it in like 3 months or so now, guess I will give it some suid later. See was it does.
