Tailspot Blenny

Hi....I was hoping we could build a thread on this fish. There was no specific topic that I found on a search. Please feel free to post your experience with this animal. I'd also be interested to hear about how you feed them. Thanks. SH

So far, the tailspot has been great. Out and about. Has a very funny look and squats in weird places...funniest is when it stays in the tubipora with just it's head sticking out. Haven't seen it actually eating yet. I'm trying to put seaweed in a clip for now. SH

The tailspot is a beautiful fish, I have a blenny (bicolour) which I feed nori grated into small pieces daily. He also readily excepts a frozen seafood mix of cockle/shrimp etc which I feed once a fortnight-ish. I'd recommend the nori as my blenny has coloured up loads since I got him, here's a before and after shot 3 weeks apart.

Great pics as always, SH, & you too, fras.

Hope this thread keeps going for a while--the tail spot has to be my favorite fish...may have to set up a new tank just to get one...

SH--did you get yours locally or mailorder it?

Liveaquaria...wasn't easy....seemed to go quickly..but..they were still in stock the other day. OK...the Nori....you think he'll eat it on a clip? When you sprinkle it in...do you see him swim for it? SH

Ha ha, yeah, I was on LiveAquaria email notification list for this guy more than once and each time I responded to a notification it was already sold out!

Just as well, tho. Gave me time to force myself to admit that I really don't have room for one currently...

Diane, I hear ya.....I'm at my limits with my tank now. I might be able to add another coral or two, but, that's it for me. Just cleanup crew replacement as they drop out. SH

He doesn't go into a feeding frenzy for the nori, but he knows it's there when I put some in, I can see his eyes looking up at the surface and he kind of fidgets on the spot. I feed in the morning and it takes about half a day for him to finish it, he just swims to the surface and takes a bit, kinda like any fish would feed on flake. He feeds pretty much all day alternating between the nori, algae on the rocks/glass and pods. Pods particularly in the morning when the lights first come on, they take about 30 mins to scatter and the blenny takes mouth fulls of the things.

I did try nori on a stick as the first try at feeding the stuff. I found it finicky to do, unsightly in the tank and the blenny would only eat it once it had melted off the stick and was floating around the tank. It also tended to come off in large chunks and blenny would have to suck in and spit out loads to get it small enough.

SH- great pics. i love these guys. i don't have one currently but was thinking of getting one. BTW your second pic looks like the blenny is coming out of the coral(had to look again).

So far..seems like a great addition. I wanted a blenny and was also looking at a midas and bicolor. There are a couple others which I wanted but avoided because they have a venomous bite (I have kids in the house) SH

Thanks fishfreak..... I think blennies don't get a lot of press...at least not until lately....sorta like the coral thread on which ones are great but get overlooked. SH

So far, this guy is doing pretty well. The food that seems to be working is Ocean Nutrition Formula II flake, crushed into small pieces and swirled into the tank. He's been picking it up now. Haven't seen him pick on any seaweed/nori placed in a clip. Also tried some green frozen cube stuff but the skunk cleaner grabs the cube and drags it into the depths. SH

Oooo Cute little fish. How hardy are they and would it do well in a 20L fowlr along with a red firefish? It's my first tank and I'd like to add a blenny but I can't find too many blenny knowledgeable people to talk to. Information on some of the blennies I've looked into isn't available in large amounts either.

This blenny seems really hardy...active swimmer..comes to the front of the tank when I come by. I think he would be fine in your 20 and should get along fine with a firefish. Firefish are dartfish or a type of goby as I understand it. SH
