Do you feed your corals?

I was doing some research to see what most folks do. Do you feed your corals? And if so, what brand/type of food do you feed? I've read many mixed reviews about foods such as reefroids, cyclopees, reef chili, etc. I also googled trying to find some old threads on this but the ones I found didn't go into much detail. I'd love to hear your experiences and opinions!

Many people do and you can feed a variety of things depending on what kind of coral you have. Personally I use LRS Reef Frenzy as well as Mysis shrimp but I use that to feed the entire tank and not just the coral. LPS are easy to feed and you can feed them frozen food pretty easily. Just make sure that the pieces you give them aren't too big as they may end up throwing it back up or be targeted by your clean up crew. At one point I had a hermit crab pull open the mouth of a micro lord and start pulling at the food (hermit had to go after that).

The other food I use is BRS Reef Chili. I like the very small particle size which looks small enough even for acro polyps to pull in. Unfortunately like many things in this hobby, it's almost all anecdotal evidence. From my experience, LPS are very easy to feed and will take pretty much anything from frozen to pellets. If you look at the BRS website under the Reef Chili product page there is actually a video that references a study that was done comparing a few different coral foods and their impact on a few different corals and reef chili had some of the best results.

Fauna Marin LPS pellets for my trumpets and acans and even euphylias and chalice have great feeding response with the trumpets asking for more before I'm done feeding the whole tank! Mushrooms eat them too

I feed reef chili about every other day or so and mysis to my acans every once in a while. From what I can tell there is no doubt an advantage to feeding for both sps and lps, but the key is to keep those nutrients added to the tank from being converted to dissolved nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) that degrade water quality, hence regular water changes and good flow.

Below is a link to a BRS video and their opinion on feeding corals. They have the studies mentioned above comparing foods and results.

There are also some good articles on advancedaquarist.com that are more fact based rather than hobbyist anecdotal based but they also won't give you a clear cut answer because the topic is fairly complicated and there are more factors than just food availability that come into play.

Thanks all, I have seen those videos before but it was good to watch them again! I was just wanting to know your results/experiences. I think I may begin using reef chili as it seems that it might be worth the time and effort.

The nice thing about reef chili is it is cheap, it is a dry product, and it lasts a long time!

I agree completely. One small container will last pretty much forever in a nano tank. One tiny spoonful for 25 gallons, lol.

I feed reef roids and oyster feast. I do it 3 days a week in my 15g and 1 day in my 10g.

I mix in with tank water in a container, and then spray it around the corals with a pipette. I keep the powerhead off during feeding.

Seems like so far reef chili and reef roids are the most popular choices. I think I'll ride the BRS bandwagon and go with the reef chili. I need to spend some more money and place an order with them anyways lol. Thanks for everyone's responses
