Thought about HOB Refugium

Hello everyone,

I've got an $80 credit and im thinking about getting this CPR hang-on-back refugium for my 17G cube reef. My only concern is that I want to have some sort of surface skimming incorporated into whatever upgrade I make to my filtration. A sump isn't an option at this point unfortunately due to a lack of space as well as a need to keep everything relatively contained within the system. The one I'm looking at is linked below, anybody have an idea on how to incorporate surface skimming into this while hiding that pump?

maybe this would work?

For those prices why don't you just do a modded used AC 110 with a surface skimmer from oceanbox? That's what I'm planning.

The mod is super easy and you could even buy the entire kit from oceanbox if you truly felt like it. Also there's somebody selling AC 50s on a for sale page that could also be modded easily and oceanbox has inserts for those too.

I have thought about that, I just thought the CPR would be a cleaner overall look. Plus BRS doesnt stock aquaclear and I have that $80 credit there.

Im just wondering if theres a way to either move the pump inside the refugium or put that pump into some sort of box like the one for the AC70.

I got one on my fluval spec & wish I would of thought of this to hide the pump. My tank is only a few weeks old & can say I'm pleased with the volume this refugium adds. Tossed in some algae & it's been a Pod factory so far! I can say this it gave me room to hide my heater & much more choices of a protein skimmer. I did paint the sides black & do wish I had done the same all the way around, cause running the light opposite of the tank a lot of light bleeds out.

I'm thinking of going to Home Depot and getting some black acrylic pieces cut to make an overflow box of sorts within the tank that the pump can sit in. Unless that AC70 one will fit that pump. How big is the rio it comes with?

Thanks for the dimensions! Looks like it should fit, I'll order it and see. If it the overflow box part fit, amazons good about returns on things.

I modded a large CPR fuge to put the pump inside and have it "suck" water from the tank into the fuge. It works fine, but you need to drill a small hole at the top of the tube inside the fuge so that if the power goes out it wont siphon and overflow the display tank. Basically I just cut the tube from the inside and siliconed it to the intake of the pump. Then if you wanted you could make a skimmer box to put around the tube that will hang in the tank.

Worst case if it does not fit. Oceanbox design is a sponsor here on the forum. I am sure he will work with you and make one that will fit your needs.
