Sammaredsox
Hey all, I have a new clown and was wondering about a good anenome to get for him. Any ideas? Link to comment
Snow_Phoenix
RBTA would be a good choice. But key question first: Is your tank ready/mature enough to hold a nem? Link to comment
Clown79
There is no guarantee an anemone will host a clown. How old is your tank? What lighting to you have? Are you prepared to deal with an anemone moving around and the possibilities of the negatives of having one? Link to comment
burtbollinger
watch this before you consider an anemone Link to comment

jestep
Your chances of captive bred ocellaris and BTA's pairing is low IMO, it wouldn't surprise me if it's in the realm of single digit percent of them hosting an anemone over anything else in the tank at all, and they tend to not differentiate between anemones and powerheads or any other arbitrary coral or object in a tank. If you want something that will host, get a maroon. Link to comment
Sammaredsox
Tank is about a month old. Live rock and live sand from an established tank I had. Water parameters are good. I am just interested since he is just a juvenile and just kind of swims around near the powerhead. He loves to chase the two tiny domino damsels I have in there with him though! I just want to make sure he (the clown) is happy. Right now he appears to be but he loves to chase the two tiny domino damsels in the tank. Do I need to get another clown for him or are they good by themselves? Link to comment
jestep
I wouldn't add one yet either. It's possibly, but 6 months to a year and a stable tank is a much better bet for getting one to stay put and thrive. Link to comment

Thanks They're not difficult or anything, it's not an issue of them not surviving IMO, I would even put them as much easier than many easy to medium difficulty coral. They and any other anemone just do much better in an established tank. I honestly can't tell you exactly why either, I believe it has to do with the establishment of more complex micro fauna that serves a purpose that I don't quite understand, but I've done them in 1 month old tanks and several year old tanks, and even personally speaking, they do way better in an older tank even if it is in worse condition than a new one. There some intangible factors that greatly benefit anemones and time seems to be the only way to get to that point. Link to comment
