Switching for a 55 to 40 gallon breeder

Hey everybody I have been looking into getting a new tank I was wondering how hard and what to do to switch my tank I have 2 clownfish and blue devil and a sea anemone i put in there a few days ago.

Switching tanks is pretty easy. Those tanks are actually about the same size. The 55 is less than 8 gallons bigger and the 40 has more surface area.

 

IME, the key is not to disturb the old substrate. Save all the water you want to transfer prior to disturbing the sand. Once you disturb the sand, you need to discard the remaining water.

 

If you plan on putting the new tank where the current one sits, you'll need to put your livestock in 5 gallon buckets, or a Brute container, or storage containers while you switch them. I always keep fish, live rock, and coral in separate containers. Even though the tank is smaller, you'll need to have a lot of new water available.
