Cobalt Neotherm Heater Not Working?

I noticed some of my corals have been a little more recessed than I'm used to seeing lately, and when I stuck my and in the tank to move my Acan (I think was getting too much light, moved it to a more shaded area) my water felt pretty cold. Put the back of my hand to the heater to make sure it was running and low and behold, no heat. The LED display is working and stating that it is warming up to 78 degrees, but this thing isnt emitting any heat. So it looks like whatever electronics are inside this thing are telling the heater to actively heat, but the heating mechanism itself isn't working.

Has anyone had an issue with this, or know if its fixable?

I can't tell you really anything that you can do or use on your own tank but I too have a NeoTherm Heater and am amazed at how cold the water is some days. The next day it feels really warm. Maybe the heaters aren't as amazing as they were made out to be with their .5 degree temp shift.

I just recently got an apex but haven't put it on the tank yet. Hopefully that will shine some light and tell me if the water is staying as stable as it claims it is and my own body is just perceiving the temp change differently.

I just noticed the water was cold, and my digital thermometer confirmed the tank had dropped to 70 degrees, no wonder my corals were/are looking unhappy. I paid too much for this thing for it to be acting up the way it is, and I don't want to go dropping money on a new heater but it looks like I might have to.

I did some scouring over the internet and in some amazon reviews, someone stated they contacted Cobalt Aquatics, and they told them to perform a reset by unplugging it for 30 minutes and leaving it submerged. I tried this last night and it seems to have worked. Kind of inconvenient that I'm going to have to monitor this to see if it continues happening. My tank is back up between 78-80 degrees, corals are plumping back up and getting happier.

I've heard of issues with these heaters. I actually don't understand the high reputation since ther are so many issues and inconvenient ones like yours.

The sleek design pulled me in for sure and I'd had really bad luck with glass cased heaters over the years. I bought it before I did a whole lot of research on it truthfully, I just took inTanks recommendation on it. Thankfully, no problems since this.

This is the first issue I have heard of with these heaters. Well besides the 200w versions they made. Those had a design flaw. I run two 100 watt units in my tank and they work great. No issues. Temperature never fluctuates. I have them both plugged in to my Apex for monitoring but so far so good.

I've heard of them needing resetting, in the process they stop working. Thats really inconvenient as you could lose your tank.

I've read of quite a few melting as well.

I've read, (post purchase, unfortunately) of the 150w and 200w melting. The resetting is inconvenient, but I personally am not worried about losing my tank because of it; the gradual 6-8 degree drop would definitely be stressful, but I monitor the temp all the time and even if, for a day or two, the tank were at 68-70 degrees, it would definitely be added unneccessary stress on the livestock, but I dont think there would be any casualties.

Generally speaking, though, yes, very inconvenient. Especially for the price of these things.

  • 3 months later...

this topic is a couple of months old, but i'm bumping because i am experiencing the same exact issue as the OP with my 75w neotherm today, which is of course, 4 days outside of the 30 day return window.

i'm going to try the unplug method listed above and in the meantime be thankful that i just happened to have new coral to add today and a: noticed the tank had grown cold (72 degrees!) and b: that we have backup in the meantime. annoying!
