New Tank

After having a few saltwater tanks for 18 years I had to take a few years off between moves and have now started up a DIY 10 gallon AIO tank. I didn't have too much luck with my last tank after investing a lot of $$ into it...I think the rock I got was really poor and just had too much nasty stuff on it to allow me to have a great tank.

With this tank I am starting slowly and making sure I do it right. The tank consist of:

  • MaxiJet 600
  • Evo LED (went cheap to start but will upgrade once I get established)
  • 50w heater
  • 3 chambers in AIO overflow
  • 1 inch live sand
  • 8 lbs base rock
  • 4 lbs live rock
  • Holds exactly 8 gallon of water.

Livestock consist of:

  • Small clown (will move if he gets too big)
  • GSP Island
  • Orange center zoo's
  • Brown pollups that came on a piece of live rock

Parms:

  • 0 ammonia or nitrates.
  • Nitrites are less than 5.
  • Salinity at 1.025.
  • Running carbon in overflow and filter floss. Any recommendations?

I am getting diatoms so I am ready to put in some snails. I was thinking of a few Ceriths but wasn't sure what other's to get or how many. Also, what would be a good shrimp and small fish to put in.

Also, how important is it to have a spin stream or Hydor Flo?

Thanks, Tim

I'd start just with a cuc a few snails and a few blue or red leg hermits. Sounds like you are on the right track and welcome back we can never stay away forever lol. Also the spin stream or flo aren't mandatory if you can get 2 nano power heads for cheaper that would also work. Watch those brown polyops the can spread rupee fast and over run a tank. Gl man and welcome back

I will watch the brown poly's. They came on a piece of LR that I got but it is on top and easy enough to take out if they spread too much. I have noticed them starting to multiple so they maybe on the way out. I love GSP but know it can overtake a tank so that is why I purchased a small piece of LR to put them on in the sandbed.

the best advice you might ever receive is get rid of those nasty brown palys now. they ruin tanks.

my new #1 rule is no cheap ugly palys...no joke.

My LFS has live rock on sale that is fully cured so I will probably just get rid of the piece with the brown pallys on it. No sense screwing up the tank over a $4 piece of rock.

Thanks for the compliments. My goal was to create a clean looking, easy to maintain tank. Overall I am really happy with the exception of the lights. They are very spotty with the blue so I need to raise them up which is why I have the wood planks holding them up. I need to figure out a better, cleaner way to raise them up. Any ideas?
