Clean Hands

Just wondering what you all do before sticking your hands in the tank.

I generally just use what ever soap is next to sink and I've never noticed any effects other than my skimmer stops producing temporarily.

All of my past experience has been with larger systems and I know these smaller tanks are less tolerant to pollutions so I wanted to see what the pros do.

I wash my hand with dish soap rinse for a few mins dry off well and then rinse agian. Really important is washing after you get out of the tank. The bactieria on your hands and arm can transfer to your kids or your eye and mouth. Really bad stuff floating around in there and super foreign to us in most regards. Just my 2 cents and how I look at it.

I wash my hand with a mild soap then dry, and rinse again and dry and off I go. I tried wearing gloves in the past, but I found them too difficult to work in.

Once done, warm water and soap again.

I absolutely have to wash my hands after they went in the tank - and this is worse when I am doing maintanance because I need to wash my hands after i touch corals before I handle my equipment. Nearly OCD about handwashing now... >.>

I go full-ER. ;)

Slap on a pair of disposable wrist length powder-free nitrile gloves and then wash my hands after w/hot water & soap. Protects the tank from the hand lotion I need to combat winter-time alligator hands, protects me from all the pathogens & toxins the tank has to offer.

I also have a box of tougher slightly higher mil "elbow-length" (which seem to be mid-forearm length in reality) gloves for when I'm planning to do rockscape work or the like.

I thought you were joking, but I see BRS has a reef safe soap. Is that what you use (BRS Reef Suds)?

Yeah the guy that makes it used to be very active on here. Bought a couple of bars a couple of years ago when he was getting started. They last a long time.

I was lucky enough to win a bar of Reef Suds a few years ago. That stuff is great!

Same. I bought a bar over a year ago and still have over half. I feel as if my hands are cleaner using that stuff than using the expensive stuff my wife buys. haha

Maybe that's why my garage tank was so healthy  in there I never really washed my hands before putting them in......even in the house I rarely wash before entering the tank. When finished I just do a quick rinse and call it good.

With a tank in the garage well all sorts of stuff gets in there  I know sawdust is one as I have built many stands in my garage and well dust everywhere and tank is not covered....
