Hello everyone, I am not new to having fish but I am new to having saltwater fish. So far I have a fully cycle 10 gallon with live sand and rock. As for filtration I have a hob rated for a 10 gallon tank and a circulation pump(aquatop cs1). As for fish I have a blue green Chromis and a peppermint shrimp. I've been doing some reading and seems like the chromis will out grow the tank. So I'm taking him back to my lfs and getting a yellow watchman and maybe another fish just not sure what any suggestions?

Blue/Green Chromis can reach a size of close to 4 inches, keeping a single individual in your tank would be fine if you really want to keep it. You're pretty limited in a such a small tank for what fish you can comfortable have, if you got a Yellow Watchman Goby to replace your Chromis that would be it for fish in my personal opinion.

If I'm limited to one fish how would a false percula clownfish do in a 10 gallon? Or is not recommended?

By the way if I do good with this tank I will be converting my 55 gallon freshwater tank to a saltwater tank.

You can do a pair of occies or percs in a ten gallon with no other fish in it.

any of the gobies would work. Also any of the blennies, firefish or clownfish. In the Nuvo 8 below I kept a small clownfish, a tailspot blenny, and a green banded clown goby.

Eh, its all a grey area. People do it... no one usually saying anything...but I do silently judge. I personally wouldn't consider it. People argue about stuff like this endlessly....then you then get someone comparing 120g reefs to the size of the ocean. it all gets quickly tiresome.

For me, jamming 2 clowns in a 10 seems a bit much. If I had a 10, I'd do 1.

Ok thanks, I'm leaning on getting one clown fish and a peppermint shrimp. I also seen another shrimp called sexy shrimp, but they are really small and seems like the clown fish will eat them.

I think I'm going to be doing any corals just yet. I want to get the maintenance of saltwater first since it tricker than a freshwater tank. I just hope I don't kill anything in the process.

you wont, keep reading and asking questions...when in doubt ,dont do....ask.

biggest mistake i see lately is people asking questions about something they already did that was wrong.

this is a good place to get info.

Welcome to nano reef. Salt water will be a little more work but if you maintain a freshwater tank as it should be it will not be that much more. Are you testing the water? I have to admit to being one of the bad people that have kept 2 clowns in a 10 gallon tank. I still have them and now they are in a 20. Compared to many other fish mine have always found a spot in the tank they like and do not swim all over the tank except at feeding time. They pretty much hang out in the back right corner and always have. Even if I move all the live rock towards the middle of the tank. A fun combo to have is a goby/shrimp pair. Depending on which shrimp you get it might be a very busy landscaper always pushing sand around make a network of tunnels under the rock. So make sure your rock work is solid. There are many different ways to maintain your tank. The simplest is a less equipment but you absolutely must be faithful to doing 20% water changes every week. Especially with a pair of clown fish. They like to eat a lot so they poop a lot. This is a great hobby. Such interesting creatures. People here will be very helpful but they will always be conflicting advise. That is just because there are so many ways to run a tank and so many choices in livestock. Please do ask before you make a livestock purchase and you can shift through the replies. Check out the tank or tanks that member has and see if that will work for you. We love more info on your tank and pictures (I unfortunately do not post pictures any more). Enjoy your tank and have fun.

I would go with one of the smaller shrimp gobie pairs. The Yasha gobie is tiny and very colorful. I keep a yellow watchman in my 14 bc with no probs. He is huge size of my pinkie finger. I also have a pair of black ray in my I M 20 gal. I favor the smaller guys. As far as water I use RO water to top off evaporation. I use it in my salt water... I try to get a good salt mix, the RO doesn't add any more minerals than in the mix. It works for me. Any way all the best.

When it comes to clowns, I think its ok to have them in smaller tanks because they generally hang out in one area.

I have 2 in a 15g, they never leave one area.

A purple firefish would do good in 10g. Very beautiful fish. You could do a small goby with it or a tail spot blenny.

Peppemint shrimp, I'm with burt on them. They go after corals. They are not very socisl shrimp either.

Get a cleaner shrimp or sexy shrimp.

I'm sorry to hear about your hand. You still can start, 1 hand still works?

Yeah I did, but if I do end up needing surgery then I won't be able to buy any corals just yet.
