Nassarius snail acting funny

My nassarius snail has started playing dead. Yesterday when I turned on the tank lights, I found him lying on the sand upside down sprawled out (not tucked into his shell). After a few minutes he "woke up" and turned over, and went whistling along his merry way. When I got home yesterday, he seemed perfectly normal: buried in the sand, only coming out occasionally to wander about then bury himself again. This morning the same thing, but I didn't hang about to see if he'd turn over because I had to leave. When I got home, he was still turned over, sprawled out, so I prodded him lightly and he retracted into his shell slowly and not all the way. Its not because of lack of food, there is still some food I gave him last night that he hasn't eaten. I don't have enough experience to know what it could be. He's not dead but almost seems like he is dying. For what reason, I don't know. Parameters are good. Everybody else is fine.

does anybody respond to anything on this forum? I am a member of a couple of other forums where people actually respond... here? nothing

same damn problem. Lying on back, even when I turn him over he manages to flip back over. But he isnt dead yet becase he occasionally moves around. still retracts partially into his shell if disturbed. It seems he is slowly dying. Does this pose a threat to any of the other inhabitants?

maybe because its about a snail. he might live. he might die. good luck

wow. incredibly insightful. you deserve a trophy.

I just read your new post. It looks as though you are having all kinds of issues right now. It's helpful to provide lots of info. How old is this tank?

The tank is two weeks old. I am new to saltwater. Have been in the freshwater hobby for 7 years. Finally wanted to try salt. Wanted a small tank to take with me to college. Hence the 3 gallon. 1 fish, 4 inverts, live rock, no coral or macro algae yet.

At two weeks you shouldn't have anything in there.

maybe because you posted a long-winded paragraph length screed about a 50 cent snail that seems like he kinda sorta might be acting odd...but not really...after you poke him.

it could also be because you didnt actually ASK A QUESTION. you rambled about poking a snail.

my verdict is he might live or he might die. my guess is he gonna die. good luck. also, what did the people on the other forums say. maybe go back to those forums and give them the play by play on the snail's movements this evening.

Fine. want me to ask a question to state the obvious?

Why is my snail dying or acting like it?

I don't know about you, but I would prefer to keep everything in my tank alive, that is to say, not dead or dying. Even if its only a "50 cent snail"

what is your snail eating?

what are your parameters? do you have test kits for ammonia/nitrites

why did you decide that a 3 gallon tank was good to start with?

what fish do you have jammed in that 3 gallon, probably un-cycled tank?

EDIT: turns out you have another forum where your fish are actually dying too. that MIGHT have been helpful to mention as well.

Test your nitrites and ammonia.

First off, it seems you are irritated with ppl who are trying to help you.

Using cap letters is yelling and being sarcastic or having attitude will just get your questions further ignored.

It is just a snail and they often do weird shit we can't explain.

It may be dying it may not be. Nassarius and other snails can sit in a spot for days.

What is your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates at?

If not testing these, how do you know the tank cycled? There could have been a spike in parameters after the cycle and that could be why your snail is dying.

If you added too many things at one time, that alone could spike ammonia because the system is new and can't hsndle the bioload.

If fish died in the tank, that can cause ammonia.

What kind of water are you using?

What kind of/how did you cycle the tank?

Did you do a water change before adding anything?

Is there water movement, a filteration system, what are you feeding?

Are you topping up with fresh water every day ensuring salinity isn't swinging?

FW tanks are very different than SW.

I have kept bettas, goldfish, turtles, tropical, and cichlids-none are comparable to SW and how in depth Sw is.

Then you didn't do it right. A FW tank can be just as complex as a SW one, and fundamentally an aquarium is an aquarium. Different parameters, same basic principles. The perceived difference in complexity is probably due to the fact that FW attracts more casual hobbyists.

Wouldn't say he didn't do it right maybe he just didn't go to the level of reef keeping with his fw tanks .

Millennials these days, always want that "I did it trophy."

My fresh water tanks was going high tech in the end - before I was thrown into salt by a friend. I still have the equipment, and I probably will take it to a reef level when I finally move. My one tank was amazing until wood I had collected probably caused me trouble. I learned from my error, one day I will do it again - better. Information from mistakes learned - better skills now including QT and all that. I'll be better at FW when I return.
