FollyFish
Hello I have read that clove corals are peaceful but do they have stingers? My clove within the last month or so has grown tentacles, it started with one but how has two. I am worried that they are getting a little to long and will soon be able to touch a Duncan coral that is near it (2.5 to 3 inches away). The tentacles don't have have a flower top and look more like what you would see on a torch coral. As well the are out all day and night, the lights don't seem to matter. Should I think about moving the clove coral? The Duncan is getting big as well, the heads are about the size of a toonie coin (28mm) without the adding the fringe. Thanks for any help. 1 Quote Link to comment
Clown79
Clove polyps don't have tentacles in the sense like torches. They have long stems called tentacles with a flower like head. They are peaceful with no defense, they can't sting. They get stung. Duncans can sting when other corals are very close but they don't have long sweeper tentacles. Quote Link to comment
FollyFish
Here is a picture to show you what I mean by tentacles. There is no flower head on this arm. Another pic, there are two other arms/tentacles laying down on the rocks behind the clove coral. Quote Link to comment
Clown79
Thats not a sweeper as they don't have sweepers. Not sure what that is unless its one of their stalks growing. Quote Link to comment
MainelyReefer
Your Clove polyps look like goniopora in that picture Quote Link to comment
FollyFish
I took those pics at night so that the tentacles would show. This is what it looks like I found a pic of the same coral online listed under Orange Tip Clove Polyps. 1 Quote Link to comment
Newstead
Saw an old thread on another forum with pics of a clove polyp frag with 2 of those "tentacles". Two responses said they are "runners" trying to expand the colony, which makes sense as you said two are laying on the rock near them. Quote Link to comment
FollyFish
Thank you Newstead I managed to have a look at the tentacles that were laying down on the rocks and noticed new polyps growing on the tentacles. So I think that you are right and that theses are "runners". 1 Quote Link to comment
Jlc1234
Made a Rookie mistake and placed my clove a little too close to my frog spawn it most definitely got stung on 3 out of 7 or 8 polyps... will they be able to recoup? Will the other polyps continue to grow or will the coral now die? Quote Link to comment
