pgrVII
Just thought id share this super quick for anyone thinking of changing their skimmer or starting a new tank. This is the reef octopus ns80and fits perfectly in my lagoon 25,"the goon". No mods needed. Plus, they're like, $43. I know, I know, does it work? Hope this helps a few! Link to comment
Cristiand
Good to know. Any micro bubbles in the tank. Currently running a ghost skimmer on my 25 lagoon and while it works fine still got some microbubbles here and there especially after a water change. Gonna give it some more time but might be switching to the reef octopus Link to comment

I put a foam tube for a fluval filter on the outlet tube and it worked awesome while it broke in. Link to comment
flatlandreefer
Good to know, I currently do not have a skimmer but this seems like a good option if I do ever get one Link to comment

nine9d
I have this skimmer on my lagoon, and it does not perform like yours. I get very wet skimmate, and it seems to skim very inconsistently. I'd rather the dark stuff like you have. How deep do you have yours in there? It was a really tight fit to get it jammed in there, and it seemed like the skimmer would pop apart when trying to fit it in there. I put it in even before I had water in my tank. Just not overall happy with the performance of it. Any help/advice would be appreciated, as I am thinking to switch over to a ghost soon. Link to comment

You wanna have it so the pump is just below the baffle line, basically so the bottom of the outlet tube can rest on top of the baffle. Hope this helps! Link to comment
nine9d
Yup, that is exactly where I have it. I know each tank is different so I will make some adjustments and go from there. Link to comment

nine9d
Hey bud, thanks for the reply. I did raise up the skimmer a tad and it does seem to be performing better. Thanks for the help with it. I have the pipe set at all the way open. Thanks! Link to comment
flatlandreefer
Just rigged up mine! Everything seems to be working except for the micro bubbles! Link to comment

KyleAwesome
Received mine yesterday, I've set it up in a bucket in the garage with some vinegar, going to run it for a few days and see if I can break it in a bit before install. Link to comment

Mine took about 5 days to break in and is working great now. I would definitely use the collection cup drain to drain it into a bigger container as the collection cup is small. Seems to be a great value so far Link to comment
KyleAwesome
So I've had mine going for a little less than two weeks now and the microbubbles have calmed down... a bit. Still annoying but no longer a microbubble machine. However, I am having an issue. The collection cup fills up every 1-2 days. I cant seem to figure out why. I've got the skimmer riding pretty high, the upward facing side of the pump sits a good 1/2" out of the water. The bubbles inside the main chamber are about a 1/4" below the collection cup and I've never seen it froth over, but whenever I come to check on it, its half full. I'm not sure if its wigging out when the ATO kicks on or what, but I can move it much higher up. Any ideas? Link to comment
flatlandreefer
The collection cup is too small. Use the port on the side of the cup and run hose into a seperate container to collect the skimmate. I got around 3/4 of a cup of liquid last week. As for the micro bubbles I turned the water outlet so it does not flow directly into the return chamber, it faces opposite of it which seemed to help the micro bubbles dissipate before entering the display. KyleAwesome
I dont know about this thing... I'm 90% sure I'm going to pull it and trash it. I have positioned it everywhere from the pump fully submerged and the output tube resting on the baffle separating the 2nd and 3rd chambers all the way up to the pump face being under 1/4th of water with the rest exposed to air (a 2" ish difference between the lowest and highest position) and no matter what 12-18hrs later I have a cup full of entirely clear tank water. I'm going to take it out and see if there is anything that can be done to make it more effective. Link to comment

I ran it with the overflow port open for the first week or so until it broke in, I am getting dark skimmate that is getting darker every time I dump it. I get about 3/4 cup of skimmate every week. Admittedly I've only had it right about two weeks so it could still be breaking in, however I did do a water/vinegar run for the first few days... With that said, Im not complaining about microbubbles (which it does produce a lot of still) but rather, I'll empty the skimmer cup when I go to bed around 10pm or so, by 6am when I get up the cup is 2/3 full, if I forget to empty it before I leave for work, it'll overflow by the time I'm home at 6pm, seemingly no matter what height I run it. It seems like its regular tank water, no obvious coloration or smell to it. This is my first go round with this skimmer, so maybe thats a problem that can be attributed to still breaking in ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Link to comment

Eventually skimmate production slowed and stuff got thicker and is now working well, although there are still a few bubbles. It definitely didn't take mine two weeks to break in though so I'm not sure. Link to comment
