XxMalaboo
Hello everyone, What overflow box would I have to buy to create a sump. I do not want to drill a tank because I am a beginner and it's setup already. The goal is house a protein skimmer. My tank is a 5 Gallon ADA Tank. I was considering purchasing a pre-built nano sized sump. I'm just lost as to which overflow box I would have to buy, and what I would need for it. I need a External Hang on the back overflow with a pump? My tank: Link to comment
asting
Look for HOB fuges. You'll have to check the dimensions of your skimmer to see if it will fit. Link to comment

Kahmu84
Also CPR makes a hob skimmer Link to comment

My tank: HOB overflow boxes are pretty cool, though if all you want to use it for is a skimmer you could just get an internal skimmer (like the Mame) for cheaper probably... That being said is there any particular reason why you want a skimmer on your 5g? Link to comment
XxMalaboo
Thanks for the replies everyone. I primarily want a sump to house extra water capacity to help stabilize some parameters. Also, since my tank is only 6 inches high, there is no real estate for a protein skimmer. I need the protein skimmer for SPS corals. I'm not feeding the tank anything for this reason at the moment. Plus I want to buy a bigger heater, and dump all the other extras in the sump to keep the display tank looking sharp. http://www.eshopps.com/products/filters/reefsumps/rs75/ The thing is, I have never used a sump or set one up. However, I can see the benefits. I'm curious how I'm going to use chemical media filtration in the sump I have listed above. I'm currently using a hang on the back filter with GFO and Bio Pellet inserts. Let me know of your thoughts! Thanks everyone! Link to comment
jtwisconsin
You don't need a skimmer to have SPS. Take a look at UWDanno's Fusion 20 that was TOTM back in October. Like several others on this forum, he has never run a skimmer on that tank: http://www.nano-reef.com/featured/_/2016/uwdanno-r113 If you won't drill your tank, the only option is a HOB overflow box. Personally I would never use one because of the risk of a flood. If this was my tank, I would look at two options: 1. Take the tank down and drill it for an overflow and then use a sump. 2. Get a HOB filter instead of a sump. Maybe something like a Aquaclear 70 to house your heater and a small skimmer. Link to comment
