Freshwater dip

The current fish in my qt. Tank got a freshwater dip. I bought at LFS, qt tank salinity matched I had a 1 gallon bag of RODI temp matched, temp acclimated, 15 minutes+/-, started transferring tank water into the acclimation bag. Maybe over 2 hours. A cup in and out method. That added 4 drops of prime and a cap full of Paraguard and a air bubbler 1/4 hose to bag of rodi. Caught the fish dropped into rodi. Set timer for 3minutes 30 seconds. Observed the fish. It more or less laid on the bottom. Timer went off I tried to catch it. It took a couple seconds/trys. And plopped it into the qt tank. It's been 1 week and I've been bringing it to hyposalinity. Took 6 days to get to 1.008

It was "shy" for about 3 days. I'd drop in frozen and set away from the tank. It'd come out to eat until it could see me. I drip in food until it stopped eating.

Fast forward to today. It's eating like a pig. Pellets and frozen. All seems good...

This is my first try. I spend almost 2 weeks reading articles about it before I tried it. And this was the method Iiked the most.

Do your research

No. Its risky and causes stress, especially if done wrong.

It doesn't look that complicated. Match ph and temperature, use RODI with prime and paraguard, and dip under 5 minutes.

Are you talking about doing this in lieu of quarantine? The problem is there isn't a substitute for a good ol'e QT. While I don't see an issue of a FW dip before putting them into quarantine I see no reason to do it either. You can treat them if problems arise or give them a FW dip if needed later while in the QT. My .02¢ anyway. I've never FW dipped any fish I've owned and I've been off and on in this hobby since 2003.

In addition to QT. I have modified my first post to clarify this.

My clown fish and Xenia have completed 2 weeks so far in QT and they seem to be okay. I plan to freshwater dip the clown before he goes to DT just to kill any parasite or bacteria that is not visible for me.

It doesn't sound it because you're reading one persons experience who did suggest much research on the subject.

If you start reading online regarding unnecessary medicating and fresh water dips, you will see the risks.

Fish can get parasites, even with all these measures taken. These steps can and do stress fish.

Qt is enough.

So a FW dip, if done correctly is a good option in certain situations. They're pretty commonly done. Wet web media has some pretty good info on how and when to do a FW dip.

The purpose of a FW dip is to kill parasites. Fish have the ability to osmoregulate (control the salt concentration in their bodily fluids) - parasitic crustaceans/worms do not. So when exposed to FW the parasite's cells literally explode.

There may be some exceptions but when pH and temperature matched, a FW dip isn't overly stressful on marine fish as long as you observe carefully and you handle properly. I use a tupperware with holes in the bottom to move the fish so that I'm not constantly netting the fish as the handling aspect can do more damage.

As noted a FW dip is not an alternative to QT but it can be used in addition to QT. Also it's sometimes the best you can do with some fish that don't do well in QT (the ones that won't eat unless they can scavenge in an established tank). Finally, a FW dip is very effective in providing immediate relief to a parasite infested fish - though shouldn't be counted on to fully eradicate all parasites.

Can you post pics of your tupperware with hole in bottom?

Thank you sir! Learning something new everyday! Lol.

Smaller tupperware with holes drilled in the bottom. Larger tupperware that holds the dip/bath. If possible use the small tupperware for all transport. Note I use the lid when transferring so the fish doesn't flop out.

Finally - as with most of what you read on an internet forum - always do your own independent research. As mentioned WWM (wet web media) is a pretty decent source when it comes to troubleshooting or more advanced topics. You just need to sort of know what you're looking for. Either that or just read a lot.

Very good idea! Thanks! I might copy it.
