How dangerous are torch corals?

I really like the movement that torch corals bring to an aquascape but I have always been cautious and never have bought one out of fear of their sweeper tentacles. Looking through a lot of TOTM profiles a lot of tanks have one or multiple torch's in their nano's. So my question is how big of a concern are these corals, is there a real risk that they will devastate their neighbors?

Depends on the torch. Aussie torches, the ones that stay smaller and more compact, never had sweepers for me. My big green torch tries to kill anything it can reach but most softies seem to ignore the sting.

It's tough though because they do take up a lot of space.

The short answer is yes. I've had them for a few years and they're one of my favorite corals. However, in my opinion, they can be incredibly aggressive and potent. For example, I once had an RBTA get close to my torch, I noticed that the side of the RBTA was staying closed up compared to the rest of it. Shortly thereafter the RBTA walked to the other side of the tank.

That being said, just becareful with placement and you should be fine. You can always direct where the tentacles are going to be based on your flow. Just don't put anything down stream.

Is there a consensus of how much spacing is sufficient? I have heard some big numbers thrown out there but what spacing is practical and reduces risk except for the most aggressive ones?

I tend to keep Euphyllia with other Euphyllia. Keeps everyone safe.

Just go by eye and remember that after a while it might grow a bit more. I got this torch as one head, and now it's split into three. An acan next to it actually got a hold of one of the tentacles and chopped off a piece of it. But everything is still ok.

But not torches with any other Euphyllia.

Not from what I've gathered. My torch is a model citizen, which I know is odd. But in general, yes.

I would urge you to move it when you get the chance. Shit will get real fast at some point in the future. They seem to just be ticking time bombs :(

Ok. Thanks. I actually had to get rid of him because of my alk swings. :(

Torches can sting other corals. In general 7" sweepers are the common number.

Most euphyllia can be placed together but torches are the one that most have noted can't be.

Mine was a problem for some other corals until I attached it to a mag frag shelve and put it all alone up front by itself, no more problems...you can see it in the sig pic below in the left corner, now the sweepers cannot touch anything,

Let's put it this way, my acid rain bta was in one spot and my purple torch kept swaying into it noticed one day it was closed up and had moved, now one side of its tentacles look melted and the other side is fine, I think people underestimate how powerful torches can be lol didn't think they'd win against a bta
