Your thoughts on my Nano plans please

Hello all

Back to marines after a few years break, broke down the old big tank and sold it on but got the marine itch again.
We bought the new Red Sea Max Nano, just something nice and sma 75l / 20gal .
Set it all up a couple of weeks back, had to change the return pump to a jebao dc-1200 as the original and replacement sent to me were making a major noise.
Anyway now the return is sorted I'm turning my attention to the skimmer, that also rattles and makes a bad noise (I think Sicce have supplied a bad batch of pumps/impellers or something)
So... I have been looking at alternative skimmers and pumps.. problem is it's a small area to play with (65mm wide) so limits what I can get..
After a bit of sizing up it would seem that the Tunze doc 9001 skimmer would fit and gets decent reviews for been quiet.. with that been smaller it also means I could squeeze a small aquamedic multi reactor in as well.. Does that sound like a decent idea?
Would a small reactor tumbling away be a lot better than just a bag of carbon sat in the flow before the return pump?

Here is a a couple of pics (to scale) of the rear sump section, first pic is how it is now.. and second pic is how I envision it (already done return pump and added a heater...
can anyone foresee any issues I may have with what I want to do?

And heres just a pic of the tank a week or so old into it's cycle
I also added shelfs in the tank cupboard for storage.

Tank looks great!

You should contact sicce about the pump issue. They are reportedly very good. I have a powerhead thats great and no noise at all.

I have heard the tunze skimmer is really nice. I don't use one but I'm sure someone else will chime in soon.

You don't need a reactor, you can just put media in a bag and wait to get a reactor or do without one.

Welcome!!!

The tank looks great!! I agree with Clown - contact Sicce. I use their syncra pumps because they are so quiet so something isn't right with yours. Sicce has good customer service as well. I had a pump go bad about 3 months after I bought it, called them and they sent me a replacement immediately. Keep us posted on your progress!

Hi James, good to see you here! Welcome!

Skimmers that might fit are:

Tunze 9001

Tunze 9001 DC

Aquamaxx ws-1 (you can buy this in the uk but it's under a different brand name, check AFM marine PSK-S1.0)

Aqua medic evo 500.

got the marine itch again.

LoL!! Sounds like an infection or something...

Anyways I think you got a cool tank - sucks you've had the pump issues. I think you'll like the DC return pump though - I've had the DCT 4000 on my 40br setup for a little over a year now and it's been great.

I think the Tunze skimmers are pretty solid bets. They're small and quiet and while I haven't had one they seem to be well reviewed by most. IMO if you're going to get a skimmer I would maximize the size skimmer you can get and skip the reactor. I think given the space it takes up a larger skimmer will be more effective than a smaller skimmer and tiny reactor.

Like the stand modifications!

Finally - what are your stocking plans? I'm guessing a mixed reef type setup, which shouldn't really change the equipment at this point.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for making me welcome!

Hi Rory, It's a small world on the internet isn't it :D

Well there has been a small change in my circumstances with the tank.
I was speaking to the retailer I bought the nano max from and telling him my plans for skimmer and reactor.
Because the Nano max was supplied with a noisy return pump and now the skimmer pump is extremely loud he basically doesn't see why I should have to go spending extra on skimmers, pumps etc when red sea should fix it.. He spoke to Red Sea but they do not have any dates for new fixed pumps..
Bearing the above in mind the retailer offered to swap my nano max over for a red sea reefer nano 105.
I went for the deal and I will be getting it tomorrow, to be honest I wish I just went with the reefer in the first place as they are exactly the same size tank and cabinet but the reefer has a small sump, this means I have about 30L extra water capacity and now have a huge range of skimmer, reactors, pumps etc that I can use an much much easier for maintenance. Best to to this now before I live stock in the tank.
Will post pics when I get it all set up but here is a pic of one with the sump :)

Sounds like a good deal - that's a pretty cool supplier to do that! I think you'll be happier with a sump and if you were willing to drop some extra coin on a skimmer anyways this way you can have a better selection to choose from and still have room for a reactor.

You can still use the DC return pump too.
