Skunk Clownfish is Bullying the Yellow-head Jawfish

WelcomeD

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

As subject, my paired skunk clown fishes started bullying my little cute yellow-head jawfish recently, also chasing the firefish all around the tank. (lucky, covered tank, not jumped out)

My tank is Fluval M90, 36” width, would like to invite your expertise, if this tank is too small for a pair of skunk clown fish?

Or, this is a natural that the skunk clownfish is aggressive and will always harass the tank mates?

Or, this kind situation will be only happened when the clown fishes are preparing for spawn?

As if this is general that all the clownfishes are fighting for their territories and continuously aggressive to other tank mates, I may consider to remove the clownfish from tank, and let the anemone to take care the coming Banggai Cardinalfish babies.

Thanks.

Hello! I'm the resident "Clown Nut" here! :D

Your tank, I believe is around 35-40 gallons, no? This is not too small for a pair of clowns. Pairs have been kept happily for years in 10 gallons. Clowns are part of the Damsel fish family, which are notoriously mean. They are bullies by nature. Clowns will get more ornery during a spawn, but are generally always d*cks.

When you say "take care of", do you mean eat or protect? Bangaiis have a symbiotic relationship with Sea URCHINS. The anemone will kill and or eat the anemones. If you plan on raising the babies, you will need a separate tank or a breeder net, as well as a steady supply of gut-loaded live baby brine shrimp.

The M90 requires a sump mod for it to work properly. There are several threads on here on how to do it- it just requires some silicone and scrap glass/ acrylic. The stock light is also not powerful enough for anything more than basic softies-if that. The pump should be upgraded, too. I'm just letting you know, not trying to be mean.

I don't know if you're new to the hobby or not, but I do believe that you should do more research, especially regarding your livestock choices. It is common knowledge that clowns are bullies, which leads me to believe you have done no research at all. Firefish and Jawfish are very delicate and Jawfish, in my opinion, should NEVER be kept with clowns. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH.

Thanks Nick, I initially having two IM 20 tanks and kept them in separate, but recently combined the two into one.

The new M90 came with new sump design, the first barrier are now reversed and I purchased the intank media filter at 1st stage. I uses four Tunze 8850 LED, 9004 and 6040 pump instead of bundled FLUVAL parts. ;)

I'd ever kept 6 cinnamon clowns in one 80" tank, when I was in Taiwan, with no problem to tank mates.... I guess the tank size is still the major issue to keep fishes OK.

For the Banggai Cardinal with anemone, which should be OK, not food, I guess. https://www.google.com/search?q=Banggai+Cardinal+anemone&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiRu8rV39jPAhXD4D4KHduKCuUQ_AUICCgB&biw=1745&bih=864

I should research earlier, before put them all in one tank, thanks again for the advise. Thanks.

Nick, appreciate the review and advise.

I am considering to add more rocks for firefish and yellow-head to hide.

That's a good start!

Actually, I initially purchased IM 30L, but arrived in broken, the vendor resent a new set, but broken again. Feel frustration and lost confidence to purchase the tank online. I checked several local fish stores, but can not get IM SR-60, but mostly recommended REEFER 250, which is too heavy that I can not deal with it alone. Thus FLUVAL M90 is at home, and my wife loves it. ;)
