Nano reef tank recommendations wanted

Hi All,

I've kept marine fish before so not new to the hobby. My daughter wants a nano reef (30 litre size). Can anyone recommend a brand / model? Definitely want glass not plastic. Feel free to also tell me about brands / models to avoid!!!

Cheers

30 liters is about 8g. Innovative Marine used to make an 8g aio, but they don't anymore - still, you might be able to find a used one. Though I should warn you that some people had issues with cracking on those models (I think because of the curved glass).

Probably my top recommendation for an 8g AIO would be the 8g Cadlights Mini. JBJ's Rimless 8g would be my runner up in this category. But it's also worth noting that while the Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion 10 is slightly larger than what you were looking for, it's a great tank, and the volume of the actual display probably is about 8g.

If you don't want an AIO tank, I would check out the AquaMaxx Low Iron Rimless Aquariums. None of them are exactly 8g, but several are slightly larger or slightly smaller than that.

Hope this helps!

I'm going to recommend an Innovative Marine tank. They currently have 10, 20, 30 and 40 gallons in their Fusion series. The craftsmanship is very nice. If you want something with a sump, look at the Red Sea Reefer Nano.

Good luck,

Nick

Thanks for the replies guys. I should also have said that I'd prefer an aio with auto top-up as I understand one of the issues of smaller tanks is that of evaporation.

If you want one that has a built-in ATO, Red Sea Reefer Max Nano is the only one I can think of. At 20g, it's substantially larger than what you were looking for. And, being Red Sea, also substantially more expensive. But Red Sea is excellent quality; you get what you pay for.

That being said, it would be a lot cheaper to just buy an ATO separately. AutoAqua's Smart ATO Micro has been getting excellent reviews (there's a whole thread on it in the Product Reviews forum here, if you'd like to check that out), and it would fit perfectly well in any of the tanks I mentioned. That way you get the small size you wanted with an ATO.

Thanks. The RSM Nano looks lovely but is too expensive. We don't want a sump or something that bulky for ATO, preferring something smaller that can hang on the back of the tank. Perhaps we can forgo the ATO and top up by hand!

IM doesn't seem to be a too popular brand in the UK. Guess we'll wait for a used RSM Nano to appear on eBay!

There are basically no tanks with built-in AIOs. Just look for something in your area and buy a separate ATO.

Innovative Marine tanks certainly are great... I have one 10G, my cousin has 3, two 10g's and one 20g.

May want to check out Red Sea tanks too... the new Max Nano is plug and play! You just plug it in and it is reef ready! I wish it was available before i started any of my other tanks!!!

good luck.

Buy an IM10 tank, smart ato micro, and a brightwell bio block to put in the chamber and you are set. For lighting if you want something inexpensive go with the new Kessil A80. Add a heater and you in business.

Fluval Spec V with nanobox ;) (plugging myself since i have one for sale). Use the smart micro ATO. I fabricated a top off container using a bpa free plastic air tight container from amazon. It was really pretty!

Hey, there are some brands of tanks available in Europe that we don't have in the US; you should also post on Ultimate Reefs (a UK reefing forum) asking for recommendations about that; they'd know about about the ones we don't have access to in the US!

You could also just browse the pico reef forum on Ultimate Reefs. Just at a quick glance the Aqua Nano 30 or 40 or the TMC Microhabitat 30 look like they may suit your needs. Newa More 30R also looks really interesting.

IM are great, alot of ppl like the Fluvl specs.

As for ato, most don't come with one. I just manually top up every morning, its one cup of water and done. I made a diy ato for overnight trips.

I know you fancy the AIO SC aquariums make a 24 gal. starphire here:

I would also think about a non AIO and just add a HOB filter. not sure if you have any think like the petco dollar per gal sale but I have a 20L with and AC 50 that doing great. cheap to set up so you have more $$ for goodies that go inside the tank.

good luck!

Get an ATO. Check out www.autotopoff.com Based on your use of liters though, you may not be able to have it shipped there.

As far as hang on back ATO, I have never seen that. The obvious issue is that you have limited volume, and if you put it above the display level you can easily create a siphon of freshwater into the tank.

I have used foodgrade tupperware containers in the past as ATO reservoirs without issue, and it doesn't make the tank bulky.
