So I could never get the Ai prime's to stay connected in parent/child mode. I think it could of been a defect or because the tanks pretty far away from the router but I ended up taking them back and switched them for something else...

Got some fiji pink sand today! And plan on picking up the live rock and water this weekend..

Still not sure what to do with the filtration on this guy, ideas?? can't sump this bad boy where it's at so that's not an option!

There's a guy in the hardware classifieds that makes acrylic items. You could do an awesome HOB refugium. If not, AC110 is not a bad plan.

Thanks for the heads up! I've had the same idea with the ac 110 too...I'll have to look into it more

Sure. I had a 29g 7-8 years ago, and did a HOB refugium with it. That + plenty of flow provided would be enough.

edit:

Also, check out the jebao wavemakers. One of the PP-25 or equivalent on wave mode would be pretty killer on a 29. pretty affordable too.

So not much has really changed lol. But none the less I thought I'd try to keep this thread updated. So I ended up switching the lens to the wide angle on the radion and it covers the tank much better.

I also went ahead and ordered 30lbs of dry rock from John over at reef cleaners so that should be here middle of the week and got some Fiji pink sand ready to go.

Also picked up a hydor heater that I can hopefully fit in a small cpr aquafuge. Which I hope to be ordering once the tank gets cycled which shouldn't take long since I'm going to take a little bit of rock from my current nano tank and maybe a cup of live sand too. Pics will be up once I get the rock in and maybe come up with a scape I'm happy with. That's all for now!

I would run the AC 110 at a reduced flow rate. That can easily be done by modding the impeller.

On my standard 29g I run one tunze 6040 powerhead. I would highly reccomend it for this tank.

Cheers

I thought about the ac110 as well but I don't have room on the back of the tank with the light mount plus I can fit a bigger heater in the aquafuge.

I've already have an extra jebao pp4 so I was thinking I might just get a second one of those or the pp8 I'll look into the tunze too though!

So I got my rocks from Reefcleaners yesterday and got to work on the scape! I Had basically 4 large pieces and ended up taking a hammer to pretty much everything...lol Anyway this is what I've got so far. I ran out of reef putty so I need to pick some up tomorrow to finish it but it's basically done, I just want to connect the two sections with a "bridge in the middle.

Overall I like it. I wanted lots of swimming room and room on the sand bed so I think going vertical like I did will accomplish that. Plus it should hide some equipment that will be in the tank. Let me know what you think!

I like it. Not a ton of shelflike spaces for coral, but that's the compromise with a more open structure. Looks much cooler than just a sloping pile of rocks too.

I had a 29g as my first SW tank a while back - not the greatest dimensions for a reef tank but the size is still "near and dear" to me I suppose so I'm interested in what you end up doing here.

I think the rock work looks nice. I like that style of rock a lot. My favorite is pukani but this style is a close second. One thing about the epoxy putty I usually do to make the epoxy less noticeable is to take a small piece of rock and "stamp" the still pliable putty so when it hardens it has the same texture as the rock it's connected to. You could still do this with a thin layer laid over what you have already done but over time it could also become less noticeable as well. To keep the rocks more stable you could also use a hack saw to cut the bottom's flat. I have a rock that sticks up and by doing this it stands upright with good stability.

I think using an AC filter is a fine idea. I actually used a canister filter for a while - but it was a pain to clean so I took it down. I also had an old SeaClone skimmer that was loud and not that effective but it was cool... If you're looking into the aquafuge CPR has a model with a built in protein skimmer that's pretty bad-ass looking but honestly pretty expensive... There are a lot of HOB/nano sized skimmers available anyways should you decide you want one.

Good luck.

I like your scape. Even though there is a limited amount of sites for coral mounting on the scape you can have some coral on the bottom in little islands?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I got it connected last night so I'll have to get more pictures up. I'll definitely have to try "stamping" the rocks I never thought of that. Honestly it doesn't really bother me that much with the color difference because I know it won't take long for it to get covered up by coral or algae but I still might try that...

As for space for Corals, the Corals I want it should be fine. I mostly want to focus on euphyllia and some cool plate Corals on this tank so that's another reason I wanted a lot of room on the sand bed. Either way I'm really happy with it over just your typical mountains most people do. ie a pile of rocks lol!

Filtration is still kinda up in the air. But I'm a while off of needing it anytime soon. But I'm still leaning towards the cpr or ac110

I really like the scape. That arch could look amazing covered in softies.

Have you considered not having any external filtration? A tank like this could get on with WCs alone? Alternatively, could you do a narrow sump directly behind the tank?

Also, these picks make me wish you didn't have sand coming.

Thanks, means a lot! I have had smaller tanks in the past run on water changes alone so I've thought about it. But I like fish a lot so I plan on having a good number in this build which makes it harder to maintain. I'm debating between an ac70, 110 or an hang on fuge/sump still not sure though. Leaning towards the aquaclear.

I've never done a BB tank before so it could be interesting but I think I'd miss the look of the sand lol.

Is an internal skimmer out of the consideration? You already have a black background so disguising something like a Tunze skimmer wouldn't be all the difficult. You would still have the cup visible but you were always going to have some visible equipment whether it's a skimmer cup or a HOB filter.

It's definitely not out of the question the main thing is the noise level for me. The tanks in my bedroom so I need to keep the noise down as much as possible. I just don't have a lot of experience with skimmers so I'm not sure of the noise level.

So, little update!

I got the tank wet yesterday it ended up taking about 25 Gallons of water. What I ended up doing was doing a big water change on my fusion 10 that's been up for over a year (about 5 Gallons) and took that water and put it in the new tank along with all the new water.

For filtration I picked up a ac70, just have floss in now but will probably end up doing chemipure blue. And a sponge and floss. I also got a smart ato micro from the classifieds so that'll be here soon! I'll post pics of the tank when I get home from work today!

Looking good.

Is that a gen4 xr15?

Sadly no haha. I try to by all the equipment I can from my small lfs to support them and they haven't been able to get the gen 4's in yet so it's just the 3pro with wide angle. Still a sweet light though! I would like to check out the 4 when it comes in though.

29 gallons are hard to aquascape, but you nailed it.

Appreciate it, it was definetly tricky. I had no idea at first and I just kept playing with it and finally came up with one I liked. It should be interesting once I get some coral in there.
