Does anyone else get offended when

Does anyone get as offended as I do when someone calls your reef a "fish tank"? Nothing is more offensive to me than when you invite someone over and they see your reef for the first time and say something along the lines of "that's a neat fish tank". The worst is when they go on and on about that one little hermit crab walking weirdly upright on the side of the glass. Maybe I'm too sensitive ;)

Hahahahahaha. No I don't get offended because they are not in the hobby so they don't know the difference.

Just chillax about it. No sense in feelng sensitive about it. You can just correct them if you want but they won't remember and will still call your tank a, "fish tank."

Ha! This cracked me up. I actually call all my tanks fish tanks. Whenever anyone comes over, what they notice always intrigues me. Most of the time it is the Xenia or the cleaner that command most of the attention. So yeah, I agree with Nancy. I wouldn't let it bother you.

I think this is a made up story . Everyone knows that reef nerds don't have friends

:slap:

Well, you have a point! As spectra likes to say, I call myself a Fish flake. But fish nerd, reef nerd, seaweed hoarder - all works.

It's intended to be a compliment to your Indo-Pacific reef biotope, even if they don't know what it is.

How about, "Your fish tank is a mess"? That seems like it would be even more offensive. :(

I call myself a Fish flake.

:) I like that.

Ya know what? I really never considered this. The few people who have seen it say "Oh WOW!, That is so Cool!"

But then again, I tell them before they see it, that we have a Reef Tank. It wouldn't bother me if they called it a Fish Tank.

My dad and I call our tanks "fish tanks" as well! So to answer the original question, nope...doesn't bother me. The reality is, it is a fish tank as long as you have fish in it! If there are no fish in your tank, then I guess it might be a little weird to call it a fish tank.

My parents were visiting from out of town. My mom saw my 5 gallon reef tank and asked, "why don't you put fish in that fish tank? That's dumb and a waste of money. There is nothing in there to look at." I kinda wanted to slap her but if I did that, she'd beat my ass and I'm scared of my mom. My dad says, "there's coral in there to look at." (Thanks dad, you were always the cool one.) I told my mom to go watch the snails move around, it's very exciting.

I'm sure if other people see my little tank they will wonder the same about not having fish.

No. If they aren't in the hobby they would know no different. I call it a fish tank, its a tank with fish in it.

I really don't care what ppl call it.

There are many things in life that ppl don't use the correct terms for. Ex:

Plucking eyebrows - actually tweezing

Dying hair - actually colouring or tinting

Tattoo gun- actually tattoo machine

I call all my tanks fish tanks, so I don't really care what other people call them. On the other hand, when I've told my mom the name of a coral over 50 times, and she still ends up calling my goniopora gonorrhea, well that irritates me a bit, but it also gave me a laugh :)

 over the summer one of my friends said that I was a fishfreak. Guess I picked the right username :P

I only get offended when my wife says I spend too much time on nano-reef.

My husband hunts deer so when its hunting season, I'm a widow. He never says anything to me when I'm messing with my tanks.

Doesn't bother me, however I also call mine fish tanks, never called them reef tanks myself, I'll also just say marine aquarium or planted aquarium.
