Canadianeh
If one starting a new tank with live sand and dry rock instead of LR, would the live sand helps to upgrade the dry rock to LR since the live sand already has bacteria in it? Is having the live sand alone is enough to change the dry rock to live rock? Also, some aquarists suggested that having dry rock is better since it will reduce the risk of "hitchhiker", but does not it apply to live sand as well? RIP Sebastian
If one starting a new tank with live sand and dry rock instead of LR, would the live sand helps to upgrade the dry rock to LR since the live sand already has bacteria in it? Also, some aquarists suggested that having dry rock is better since it will reduce the risk of "hitchhiker", but does not it apply to live sand as well? Dry rock is basically rock. Nothing live on it. Live sand would help to cycle the tank. IMO, whenever the rock becomes "live" is a matter of opinion. It could be after the cycle, or once there is coralline algae on it. Live sand would help in this process. The cycle, though, is what really changes dry rock to live rock. Live rock can harbor many hitchhikers. There really aren't any hitch hikers in sand except for stomatella- and they're good. Hope this helps, Nick Link to comment
