RO/DI questions

I guess installing RO/DI unit under kitchen sink is cheaper than buying RO/DI water from pet store all the time?

Which RO/DI that is good for saltwater tanking and I guess is still good for human consumption? I also notice that there are stages? I assumed 5 stages is a better unit than 4 ?

Its cheaper and more reliable than lfs. You don't know how often the store changes the filters, therefore it may not be the best quality of water.

I don't use oe myself, I purchase distilled but I'm sure another can offer some suggestions on good systems.

I ordered mine from Bulk Reef Supply and am really happy with it. Produces up to 75 GPD. My fish seem to be happy too lol

which one that you ordered?

so distilled water can be used as well?

so everytime I do water change, for ATO, or even set up the tank for the first time, I have to use distilled or RODI water. Regular tap water won't work at all?

where do you get your distilled water?

You can buy distilled water at just about any store which sells groceries (Walmart, for example).

For drinking, you want just RO water. However, you want RO/DI (or distilled) for your tank. There are a few ways to make drinking water with your RO/DI unit (which divert the RO water before it goes through the DI stage).

I'll also recommend the refurbished SpectaPure unit: http://spectrapure.com/Refurbished-90-GPD-RODI-System

Thanks guys! Wow it must be quite an expense each time you need to do water change you have to buy distilled bottle water. Why don't you get rodi unit? It should be cheaper in thebling run.

I live in a an apartment and don't want to get into plumbing, hooking it up, breaching lease agreement, etc etc.

For a 15g and 10g tank distilled purchasing is the best option for me because in the event I choose to get out of the hobby, I'm not stuck with an ro/di unit or trying to sell it after.

You can hook it up to a cold water line (just above the shutoff valve) without permanently modifying the plumbing: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/john-guest-angle-stop-valve.html Or you could use a faucet diverter: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/chrome-faucet-diverter-valve.html

But that said, distilled is fine. I used it for years before switching to RO/DI. However, at a cost of about $0.05 a gallon for RO/DI, compared to about $0.80 a gallon for distilled, a RO/DI unit will quickly pay for itself. Heck, you could throw it in the trash when your done reefing, and you'd still come out ahead.

so it looks like I need to have a pressure tank to install RODI unit clear.png

I live in a condo, where I am going to put a pressure tank?? I don't know if this is going to work out for me. Maybe I should just buy distilled water, but it depends the availability and pricing. *sigh*

Why do you think you need a pressure tank? For drinking water?

You don't need a pressure tank to make RO/DI for source water. You only need a pressure tank if you want to setup a RO faucet.

Or are you referring to a booster pump? Your water pressure should be around 60psi to achieve typical production rates.

The unit I linked (http://spectrapure.com/Refurbished-90-GPD-RODI-System) is only $112.49. Although you will probably want to get a hand held TDS meter and possibly a John Guest Angle Stop Valve.

I don't know if I need a pressure tank or not. I have been advised that I need one if I want to install RODI unit under my kitchen sink.

I don't really care if I can drink RO water or not. I just want to install RODI unit under my kitchen sink without adding presssure tank and an extra kitchen faucet. Is this possible?

There is no need to mess with the plumbing to have a unit in an apartment, just use a faucet adapter. I am in an apartment as well, and use the adapter and I have the unit in a small plastic container I store under the sink when not in use.

Distilled water runs about 2 dollars per 4 liter bottle here, so really adds up to a lot of money.

I found a 6 stage on eBay for under $100, shipped from the US. Spent twice that for my four stage the last time I went through all this.

Do you have the ad link?
