taat2d
For those using filter floss. How often do you find yourself changing it? Mine barely makes it 3 days before it's all brown and nasty and needing changing because the water spills over the top and not going through it. Also, do you layer it with 2 pieces or just put one piece? Oops, think I put this in the wrong spot. Sorry if I did. Link to comment
StevieT
1-2 times per week is average. We change once a week. If possible, feed with the filtration pump off to prolong life. 1 cut piece. Link to comment
Jcon_343
I have the InTank basket for my AC70, I use 2 pieces, one on the side when the water first enters, chemipure in bottom chamber, purigen in top with a small square of floss above that. I change about once a week. Link to comment
Mariaface
2-3 days sounds about right. With the stock pump in my tank, I'm using one piece of filter floss. With an upgraded pump, the additional speed/height difference makes a bit of noise, so I'll layer on a second piece. Link to comment
teenyreef
I usually go about five days but can stretch to a week sometimes. Like StevieT said, turning off the return pump when feeding helps a lot. It also depends lot on how heavily I feed and how well the tank is doing at disposing of it's own waste in terms of clean up crew and bioload. Link to comment
taat2d
Turned off the pumps last night when I fed. Definitely makes a lot of sense to do that. I realize now that I can feed much less as well since the food stays INSIDE the last so much longer. Link to comment
nancymatthews
I have a 28 g nano cube and I change my floss once every 2 days. And yes, mine is yucky when I replace it. I have an InTank media basket and I don't jam a whole bunch back there. Its about the size of half a baseball. I have 4 fish, 2 turbo snails, 8 various snails, 5 scarlet hermits, 1 brittle starfish. Oh and 2 stomatella snails. That can give you an idea of the bioload in there. Link to comment
zsxking
I use quilt filling from walmart as filter floss, it's dirt cheap, and I change it daily, when feed the fish at night. Basically the more often the better. With the cheap price point, it enables me to do daily change. It would be able to hold 2 day. But it's easier to get into habit to do it daily as feeding the tank. Link to comment
ajm83
Once a week in the main filter (Fluval Spec V) and once or twice a week in my OF surface skimmer (great device). That really does get dirty very quickly. It does annoy me how wasteful it is, but I use pillow filling from ebay so it is at least cheap. I keep meaning to experiment with peroxide to see if that will clean it thoroughly enough for reuse. Link to comment
Clown79
In my 10g - 2x a week or more depending on need. In my 15g - 1x a week, it doesn't get full quickly Link to comment
squamptonbc
When I was using it, 2 days a week was about my average for changing it. Link to comment
devaji108
wow I better up my game on changing it then I do 10-15 days on my 20L.. Link to comment
Cintax
2-3 times a week. I buy the cheap bulk stuff and cut to size. Link to comment
devaji108
I have the blue and white filter pads that intank sales. I hear you can rinse and re use. what do you folk do to clean them? any think special? Link to comment
Clown79
Nope. Rinsing it won't fully remove everything. Its the same with filter sponges, nice nutrient and particle traps. I buy a bulk bag of floss for $9 cda. Its lasted almost a yr. Cut to size, put in, remove after a few days, replace. Link to comment

squamptonbc
Amazon sells it, 6.99 for 10"x18" which when I was using it lasted a fair amount of time, just cut what you need. Most local fish stores sell it, other mail order options are J & L Aquatics out of Burnaby, BC however they ship anywhere in Canada, or if on the east coast reef supplies out of Quebec likely also sells it. where do you buy it from? Clown79
I get mine at big als but most lfs or online stores sell it Link to comment
scurvy dawg
If you have access to one of these paper cutters like I show below, it makes it a lot easier to cut those bulk rolls into the right size. Link to comment
zachjohnson65
I change my floss every 3 days, if I do not it affects my pump chamber water level. I also tried bonded blue/white pad underneath a small handful of floss in my 34 gallon with media rack, It was OK but I needed every other day. I also change my handful of floss after my WC, after everything has settled down, the dirty media catches the big stuff before the pumps see it. Link to comment
xAyanex
I change mine every 3 days or so. But I don't use layers, I use a handful of this stuff because it's really cheap and I can buy it on Amazon: Link to comment
zachjohnson65
Is there any difference between that and the pillow fluff stuff? Aside from one being sold at wally world and one at a LFS? Link to comment
Clown79
I've read of others using the pillow stuffing at walmart. Not sure the difference. Here in cda, the pillow stuffing costs more for less than filter floss. Link to comment

It's the same stuff pretty much, only thing though is with pillow stuffing make sure it doesn't have any fire retardant chemicals added. Link to comment
