evan127
65 gallons total water volume, dosed Chemiclean as directed, skimmer was off during Chemiclean usage, 20% water change as directed after 48 hours. So, I have done two water changes since I finished the 48 hour use of Chemiclean. The first one was just over 20%, 15 gallons. Skimmer still went crazy even fully open. I let it run with the collection cup off for 48 hours. Still going crazy. I turned the skimmer off for another 48 hours completely. I then did a second water change of 10 gallons. Let things run for 24 hours. Turned on the skimmer, same thing. Crazy overflow. What am I missing here? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Link to comment
outerorbiter
I did the 20% and had no luck. Did another 70 to 80% change and placed a big bag of carbon. Skimmer was fine a few hours after that. Link to comment
HuyHa114
Give it some time and your skimmer will operate normally. Remember to keep your water aerated when dosing chemiclean. Link to comment
evan127
Thanks for the responses! I ran my micro bubbler while I dosed Chemiclean. I guess I will let the skimmer run and overflow until it hits its stride again. Thanks! Link to comment
outerorbiter
You will be waiting a while. The water change will help out with the underlying issue for the cyano. Link to comment
evan127
I never had cyanobacteria. I had spirulina. I'll just keep up with my normal water changes until the skimmer gets back on track. Link to comment
ajmckay
Not sure Chemiclean is effective for spirulina? I'm curious, how did it do? Regarding the effects on the skimmer, usually takes a while. I did a half dose and the skimmer was back to normal operation after about a week and a 20% water change. Full dose was 2+ weeks and a water change. No negative effects though other than the skimmer being offline but for 2 weeks I don't think I harmed anything. Link to comment
JavaJacketOC
When using chemiclean, I actually skimmed out the chemiclean by raising my skimmer up and letting it wet skim out about 5-10 gallons over the course of a few hours. My skimmer was back to normal after a cleaning and about 6 hours. This worked well for me, just a thought if you end up needing to do it again. Link to comment
evan127
It did wonders for spirulina. I'm highly impressed. Link to comment
evan127
I just did another 20 gallon water change. Skimmer is still going crazy. Link to comment
Sherman
I did chemiclean last week. This week I on back the skimmer after water change 20% .Skimmer was running crazy although is fully open. Off skimmer for 3 days. Last nite try on back skimmer still the same. Maybe I will do another 20% water change over the next few days and monitor Link to comment
Balix
can you move your skimmer higher? place something underneath to adjust height level? Mine went nuts until the third water change but still touchy until a month later. Link to comment
Orangutran
So I just dosed chemiclean and I thought the box said to leave the skimmer on? I took off the cup to let it overflow back into the sump. Should I turn off the skimmer? Link to comment

I took off the cup to let it overflow back into the sump. Should I turn off the skimmer? Keep it on for aeration. Chemi-clean tends to reduce O2 levels so extra aeration is important. If you can't run without the cup and it has a drain I would run a hose from the drain to the return section of the sump. In my 40, with an HOB skimmer, I could remove the cup. Link to comment

Thanks Mark, I'll keep it running without the cup, and let it spill out. It's like a foam party in the sump!! Link to comment
evan127
My skimmer has been running with the cup off for days. I did another 10 gallon water change last night. Skimmer is still not working this morning. I'll have to look back at my logbook, but I would guess I'm close to 70% of water changed out since I dosed Chemiclean. Link to comment

Might try doing water changes via the skimmer. Drain the cup of the crazy skimmate and slowly it might settle down. Link to comment

Unless you did the 70% at one time you are only taking out a little at a time. Do a 50% change at one time and add a bag of carbon. It will be good then Link to comment
