Bubble Coral shriveled up

Astinus

Recommended Posts

Our Bubble Coral has been all retracted since yesterday.

Can see the skeleton in the center.

Everything else appears fine.

I don't have my parameters to list.

2 questions. 1) Has anyone had a Bubble Coral do this and Survive?

2) Is our Bubble Coral done for?

It was open and acting normal 2 days ago. And it closes up over night. (Normal)

And would re-open in the morn. It did not do so yesterday and same as for today.

I just changed out Carbon, Phosguard and cleaned the filter media.

No changes recently with Tank...nothing new.

Lights start coming on around 7 AM. 1 hr ramp. Lights Go to blues at 4 PM and off totally by 7

How long has it been since you've last changed out phosguard?

Hope it's okay. I recently had one of the heads off my hammer coral shrivel up to where I could see it's skeleton. My water was normal. All my other corals were fine too. Then after 3 days it came back and now it's fine.

Shar and I really enjoy this Coral.

Seeing it all shriveled and can see the skeleton, I really hope it will make a comeback.

TBH, it isn't looking like it may pull thru. We are hoping.

I honestly can't think of any reason this happened. Literally overnight.

The only thing I can think of are Bristleworms. IDK :(

It is pretty sad though. That Bubble was 1 of our 1st Corals.

And, TBH, I was rather proud that it had been growing and the color deepened too.

I was told early on that Bubbles are hard? (To keep). Maybe so :(

You can look thru my build thread and see it progress.

Tank is dark now. I could try with a Flashlight and Phone Camera.

better than nothing, maybe we can see some sweepers, that would be a good sign, sometimes I've seen my euphyllia shriveled up far into the skeleton at night then the next day back to normal

Our Bubble would close up at night, similar to urs.

What appears to be a "Mouth" actually, U can see the skeleton. Let me see if I got a pic of the center.

I can take more pics if needed.

I didn't think it looked good :( Everything else is fine.

When I had the Flashlight and was looking it over, I noticed 2 bristle worms retract back into the "Rock"? or the Coral?

I Hope they didn't retract into the Skeleton. That would cause me to pause and think that the Bristle Worms have something to do

with the sudden down turn.

Ok, everything seems normal, then coral goes to crap.

First thing that catches my eye, I see a tube anemone mighty close. That could be a problem.

Next. Water changes. When was the last time, and how much? I don't know why. But everytime I've had a coral looking bad, I do a water change. I'd say 8 out of 10 times, that really helps out.

Next. We spoke about algae in your thread a few days ago. Did you do something to combat the algae? I'm not suggesting algae is killing your coral. However, things like hydrogen peroxide, used incorrectly, can kill your coral.

Last. Check all electrical equipment. It doesn't make any sense. But when I had a heater crack, only my rbta seemed to be affected.

Bristle worms will eat a coral when it's dying. So, just because you saw them in the coral doesn't mean they killed it. They are, more than likely, just getting a free meal because of its condition.

I have been manually removing the Algae by hand and Toothbrush. The Pink Tube Anemone, although close, they never touched.

Speaking of The Nems, The Pink Tube Nem bailed (Left it's tube)...just found it deep in a cave like structure. The RBTA, looks like it "Bailed", not moved as in "Walking" but looked like it let go of it's footing. Found it in front of structure, then I had to go and do some business. Just got back, can't find the RBTA anywhere.

I did a 10 gal WC 2 maybe 3 weeks ago. I know my "Husbandry" isn't the greatest. TBH, this is the first time that I have had a major issue with any Coral(s).

Headed to LFS...gonna get 10 gal Store mixed salt water. I know they do it right. RO/DI and, TBH, IDK what salt they use. I do know they use it in all their Tanks.

Indeed!

Yesterday the Phosphate was up a little. Put in a bag of Phosguard. Going back to LFS to re-test.

I totally agree with u Ray.

Aside from testing these...

Salinity

KH

Cal

Nitrates

Phos

What else should I ask for them to test?

Well, assuming you don't dose anything, that pretty much covers the major basics. As absurd as this sounds to even me, test for ammonia, for one.

Copper may be something of concern, but I would think you'd have lost shrimp, crabs and snails if that were the case.

Another thing may be alleopathy. Aka chemical warfare. Do you run carbon?

I do dose Cal and ALK.

Reef Fusion 1 and 2.

http://www.seachem.com/reef-fusion.php

I Dose NOPOX (NO3PO4-X) for Nitrates. (I am a heavy Coral Feeder)

http://www.redseafish.com/reef-care-program/algae-management-program/no3po4-x/

I Did go back to the LFS and showed pics of the Coral.

I Failed to mention and did not think about this, I moved the Power head about 5 days ago.

Brandy (LFS) thinks this could be the cause and She also thinks the Coral will come back around.

Our fingers are crossed.

Livestock (Clown Fish, 2 peppermint shrimps, 3 emerald crabs, several hermit crabs and many snails) are all fine.

No sign of copper and no sign of ammonia (Clown acting normal).

Yes I run Carbon and change it out Once a month or once every 2-3 weeks. NEVER let it go beyond a month.

Carbon is a must for me. I also run Carbon in our FW tank.
