jonbrett1200
Hi New to the hobby here ive had my biocube 29 gallon up and running for about three weeks and have been dosing daily with a bacteria quick start solution. All my water tests have come back zero. pH about 8.1, temperature 78, 12lbs of live rock, have in tank media basket with filter floss, purigen, and chemi pure elite running. Specific gravity around 1.025. I've been testing and im not sure if it cycled or is even cycling. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!! Link to comment
brandon429
See about this thread it details the cycle, see if you have group b rocks from here (already cycled when you brought them home) The thread shows how to tell if your rock is cycled by looking at, not what a test says, if it's group b. http://reef2reef.com/threads/new-tank-cycling-tank-bacteria-and-cocktail-shrimp-live-rock-no-shrimp.214618/ Link to comment
streamline.by.design
During a cycle, it is best not to run filtration such as carbon, chum pure, purigen. I slows the process down big time. Link to comment
reefproject
try putting some fish food in the tank and let it decompose. Remember the bacteria you are adding need something to feed off of. You really want to test daily until you see an initial ammonia spike to ensure your tank is cycling. After the initial cycle, it will go through mini-cycles once you start adding livestock... to avoid an overload add one livestock slowly - i.e. one fish at a time two to three weeks apart. Clown79
Is 12lbs LR enough for a 29g? I thought it was closer to 1lb per gallon- not a rule but a good guideline. If you haven't seen a spike in ammonia since set up, its most likely not cycled unless you used completely cured LR. Here is a very good article on cycling. https://www.saltwateraquarium.com/cycling-a-saltwater-aquarium/ I don't suggest feeding a tank with food as it will just add unwanted nutrients to the tank. The best methods for cycling are either dosing ammonia with dry rock or using LR. My personal favourite method after 4 tanks has been using Liverock and baserock together for cycling with livesand.
