Friendly
I'm thinking of a 30 gal in my apartment, but debating whether I should go with something thin (not too thin, mebe 10 - 12") or get an actual cube, which would what do you think would be better for the fish? Link to comment
Jruberti
I'm sure it varies depending on species, but I would favor depth/width over height since most of the fish I've kept don't actively swim up and down. Since the fish would have more space to swim left/right etc I think it would give the illusion of more space when compared to a tank of equal gallons that is taller. Link to comment
smiz
I would say that height is less important in my opinion. If I make some huge exaggeration we can look at a 100g tank that is 10ft tall by 14x14 fish would have very little room to swim horizontally compared to a tank that is 32x32x24. Link to comment

metrokat
I don't think the height or depth is as important as the length. Some active swimmers like chromis swim the entire length of a tank. The height becomes important for jumpers and those swimming in the middle or top of the water column. Depth is probably great for more hidey holes. I guess all 3 dims are important Link to comment
