Picked up a Low Boy

So i've been looking around online for a frag tank to connect to my main display tank(120G). most things i found online even for as small as 20G $200+ without S&H. so i started looking around LFS. Two of them had Low Boys, but one of them had one for sale. Around here they run for $169.00 plus Tax, the one i got on sale was $110 plus tax = $118.00. so now i got a sweet 50G 48"x24"x10" that im about to order a overflow for it and drill it next week. my question for all you gentlemen and ladies of nano reef is what do you believe would be a good light, I love my NanoBox Mini on my 5G lol. But need something that will fully cover this tank pretty nicely. Dont believe i need anything crazy expensive since its only 10" deep and with the frag rack i'll be making it'll be tiered 2" and 4" so closest would be 6" from top of the water for what ever high light demanding corals i put on the 4". I was thinking maybe two 48" Orbit Marine LED fixutures to cover the full 24" Width? I havn't looked into T5's before so i wouldnt know which brands are good. Last time i dealt with lighting was 6 years ago when i was running two 250 MH's lol, With my 5G i read about the nano-box and fell in love with it for that tank haha. but this low boy looking for everyone's input though as i know some people know lights way better then me haha.

Some suggestions

  • 3 Kessil A150W
  • 2 Kessil A350W
  • 2 NanoBox Duos maybe a single Nanobox Quad
  • 8 bulb T5HO Fixture
  • 3-4 PAR38 Full Spectrums (might burn some things unless they are dimmable or have proper optics for a 10" tank)

That's a lot of tank to light so I'm not sure of the most cost effective way to light it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for some references though, gives me more things to look up lol. yeah it is a pretty wide tank to fill lol

Is it gonna be a display frag tank or just a private frag tank. You could make some custom LED's for real cheap.

well itll be connected right next to my display tank like this photo for example. Though i am handy with tools and metal(Airframe Mechanic while in the Marine Corps) so I don't believe it would be hard at all for me to make something, i just dont know which LED's to buy, drivers, heatsinks, etc lol. If i have to shell out the money for something great i will, but just want something to grow them really is all and give them a nice pop. 10745024_879815632038256_12692622_n_zps2

I suggest reaching out evilc66. As he does lots of LED stuff. But if you do want DIY it we can definitely work with you to build something to your liking. I would suggest the Kessil of your going for a open top look as they have a fairly round spread which is great for square tanks and have a small foot print. Do note they are pretty expensive.

Diy'ing your would be probably be the cheapest but depending on your skills can be a bit tough. Your probably looking at sub 600 diyed. All in one solutions are nice and are probably spending close to 1000 bucks.

Yeah i've seen the price of the kessils and in person they are very nice. Money usually isn't an issue when it comes to spending for my aquarium, only thing is i have a track day this sunday, incase i crash my motorcycle or hurt myself i need that money haha. trying out a DIY would be nice though so i'll probably throw him a PM. I'll just go old school and throw on 2x250W MH :P J/K of course.
