Jayva
I know I'm still cycling. Just curious. I don't know much about the stock light on the fluval edge. But this is what the box says. Powerful bright white 7600K high liuminosity LED's with 3 deep blue night-time light LED's Will that support a GSP? I don't want it to die. My next piece of equipment is gonna be a light. But that won't be til much later. I'm not getting the gsp. Just wanna know how it would do under this lighting. For future reference. Also. Will this light cause nuisance algae? I haven't been running it because I'm afraid of bad algae. Link to comment
mystersyster
Bad algae don't give a shit if you have 6000k or 20,000k IMO. Link to comment
xilez
Any lighting is fine, I would avoid GSP in a fluval edge though.. After a year it will dominate the tank and encroach other corals. Link to comment
Clown79
The light is bare minimum. You will want to upgrade before doing corals. Link to comment
Bcb577
I agree with clown79 ,I looked at the frugal edge before I got my 14 gallon biocube,I would definitely get a stronger light for corals Link to comment
Jayva
Oh I am upgrading it. I was just curious. I ask a lot of questions lol. Thanks for the answers everyone. Link to comment
Clown79
Questions are good. Never worry about asking questions. Depending on budget, size of tank, and corals you want will depend on light choices. There are a lot of options. Link to comment

I have one big live rock island. That I want completely covered in GSP. And later much much later I'm gonna add a torch to the sand. So I'm not worried about it over growing. Plus the rock doesn't touch any of the walls so it will be isolated to that one island. Questions are good. Never worry about asking questions. Depending on budget, size of tank, and corals you want will depend on light choices. There are a lot of options. Yeah I'm looking at these two lights. One is 4x 10000k white 3 wat each and 2 blues I don't know the numbers. But their also 3 watts each. Another is the micmol Aqua mini. But it's a bit pricy. Link to comment
Clown79
What size is your tank? Gallons and dimensions. That will play a big part on the lighting choices. With the right conditions and right lighting the gsp will spread quickly. Torches are great, not really a difficult coral. The only thing is they have up to 7" sweepers and can sting neighbouring corals. Link to comment

fishfreak0114
Check out what this guy did. http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/224629-picods-fluval-edge-thread/page-3?hl=fluval%2520edge Seems good to me I really want an edge (12g though) and I've been looking into lighting that won't break the bank. Clown79
There are a few affordable options. Coralcompulsion par38 full spectrum and dimmable. 1 bulb will be enough. Aquamaxx nemolight Ai Prime Link to comment
ajmckay
GSP is a great coral IMO... I've always had it and I find that it does best (meaning nice compact growth with lots of fluorescence) in higher light and higher flow. Mine is right at the top of the tank under high intensity LEDs and it's always bridging the 2" gap between my rock and the back wall and the return outlet. So as for your particular situation if you can find a cheap small frag it may or may not do well. I can say with confidence though that pretty much any coral you put in there will look pretty horrible, like mostly brown. The reason is that the lighting is a bit too warm in color spectrum to bring out any fluorescence in corals. It's also on the low end of suitability for any corals or plants. You may be better off with a colt coral/Kenya tree - they're brown anyways and may do okay under that lighting. As for algae, the lighting itself won't cause nuisance algae. Excess algae is caused by excess nutrients so no matter what light you have if you control the nutrients in the system you shouldn't have an algae problem. It's also important, especially in a small tank, to try to limit what algae makes it into the tank. Dry rock is recommended if you wish to avoid the introduction of various nuisance algaes. Clown79
I had the same experience with gsp. Everyone warned it would take over and quickly. Mine didn't even look good until i upgraded my light and increased flow. Alot of ppl attach it to the back wall because eventually it will cover it and look awesome. Another good coral is xenia - yes they can spread quickly but easily fragged. I have never had zxenia take over Link to comment
vegasgundog
In my experience, gsp will start growing across sand a bit after running out of room on a rock. Link to comment
Clown79
^ oh ya, with the right conditions. Mine finally took off after the changes i made- they were growing over and all around my zoanthids and stung my leather. Link to comment
