which wrasse? sixline, coris, or melanurus? (or something else?!)

42g DT w/ 10g sump. no skimmer.

- hammer coral, torch, monti, multiple zoa's, a ricordea & gsp isolated on a rock.

- clown pair

- cleaner shrimp

- 1 trochus snail.

i have no pests in my tank (i've been super careful about what i introduce)

i'm aware sixlines turn into assholes when they get older.

opinions/experience/etc is all welcome!

I have 2 melanurus and they are both peaceful with all the other fish in my tank. However, if your cleaner is on the small side, they may go after it. I've seen the larger of my two eat a 4 inch bristleworm and go after my cleaner a little. My cleaner is large, about 3" so it hasn't amounted to anything.

Get a Fairy or Flasher wrasse. They're generally very active and not typically aggressive. Some of the commonly available ones are below but I think as long as you don't get one that gets 5-6" you should be fine in your tank. There are some beautiful ones that you can get for 25.00-50.00

Flasher:

  • Carpenters
  • McCoskers
  • Blue Line
  • Filamented
  • Yellow Fin

Fairy:

  • Ruby Headed
  • Pink Margin
  • Katherine's
  • Yellow Fin
  • Blue Sided

My Melanurus is a model citizen. He rid my tank of rust brown flat worms in a couple of days. He protects my clams and corals. Great personality. He gets along with my flasher just fine :)

My two cleared out my brown flatworms as well! And are doing a number on my over-population of bristleworms. And they're beautiful!

I only have small bristle worms that he snags occasionally. It's funny cause he'll spit it out like it's hot or something over and over until it "cools down" and then he swallows it :P

Do you have a male and a female or both males?

Male and juvenile/female.

My little one will do that and spit it against a rock then smash it against a rock and then finally swallow it! They're fun to watch.

melanurus wrasse is always getting compliments! haha

just to confirm, an adult 4 1/2 inch fish wouldn't be too big for my tank with my two clowns, right? (30x18x18)

Eh, it would be pushing it IMO. My wrasse likes the 36 inches of my 40b. Any smaller and i might feel bad....

Just wait until you find a small one, they're relatively common. Check Seaside tropical by you, I think they had one. Discount Tropical Fish in La Habra had one that was about 2.5" last week but that's kind of far for you.

Edit: They also had another Katherine's wrasse...I took one of the two they had last week. He's great to watch, very active and displays a lot...just sayin ;)

I think it would be fine. My tank is 34x22 and the larger male seems to spend all his time hunting in the rocks. The little guy spends more time out in the open.

OMG, don't do a yellow coris....nothing wrong with them but there are so many other fun wrasses out there that you can get for 25.00-30.00. Unless you love them, in which case get one :)

Don't rush, you've got a decent sized tank, you can probably get 1 or 2 males of smaller species and not have any issues.

There are typically species from the lubbocki, lanceolatus, scottorum, cyanopleura, temminckii and filamentosus groups available in our area. I would suggest avoiding the lubbocki group though, I have not had good luck with them. Things from the temminckii group are usually big so unless you can get them small they might not do so well in your tank (last temminickii I saw was a good 5").

I would keep an eye out for stuff in the rubriventralis group if they are attractive to you, they tend to be smaller when they come in.

I would also suggest considering Flashers, there are no articles for them like the ones above that I am aware of but you can get carpenters, mccoskers, red fin and yellow fin pretty regularly and they don't get huge. I've had a lot of success with them as well, usually able to get them to eat mysis the first day they're home, flake food the second day and pellets the 3rd.

Edit: If you decide you want something fancy, Coral Gazers had 1 last initial phase male cirrhilabrus lanceolatus for like 75.00. Pretty good deal considering they've been double that for the past year. I've seen it a couple times and it appears to be healthy and eating well. It's about 3" as well, good size for your tank.
