Blasto looking like hell

Astinus

Recommended Posts

1 Main Head and a smaller head off to it's side.

Placement....3-4 inches off Sand Bed. Low Flow.

Parameters were checked by LFS last week..Cal was a tad high

I Usually Dose Reef Fusion 1 & 2 every other day. I Skipped a dose and am dosing as I was.

Be more careful measuring the dose.

I admit I am a heavy feeder and my Nitrates are between 5 and 10.

When I feed, I am mostly using Reef Foods. (Cyclops, PE Calanus, Coral Gumbo) I Target Feed.

I also feed Spirulina Brine/Mysis shrimp. Target Feeding the Bubble coral, Elegance, and the 2 Anems.

Once a week I feed Coral Frenzy or Zoo Plankton.

What am I doing wrong? Placement of the Blasto? or Should I target feed the Blasto?

As I said, I am aware I feed heavy, but all the other Corals look Healthy, Happy and Growing.

There is a Large Feather Duster Near it...Below it but not close enough to be touched by it, is a Tube Anem. The Newest addition is a Green Long Tentacle Anem that just moved near the Blasto last night.

But this Blasto was not looking good for the last 2 weeks or so.

Help please.

I forgot to mention, I clean the filter Floss and Sponge once per week and empty the skimmer cup daily.

(1 Clown Fish)

5 Gal water changes every 2 weeks.

Fresh Water (RO/DI) Top off daily.

Turkey Baster blast rocks and areas that collect stuff....Some is food, but, I don't know what else is

being blown out.

Thanks folks.

Pic Shows Placement.

In my opinion: Target feed mysis or pellets at least once a week, remove sponge completely, replace filter floss more frequently (2x/week). That should help with some nutrient export so that nitrates come down a bit.

Do you have carbon? Is it fresh? Some corals will recede due to chemicals in the water released via 'coral warfare'. They're toxins meant to discourage other corals from growing, and carbon helps filter some/most of this out (water changes help with the rest, but will only dilute). The carbon will also help remove some dissolved organics from the water column, which will help with nutrients. Then a week or two later it'll be covered in biological film, and will need to be replaced.

EDIT: If anything's stinging it now, that won't help. And too much light may also cause recession - my blastos are sitting on a bare bottom, 10" under current orbit marine lights. Fluffy and bright as hell.

I do use Carbon and Phosguard, I change them out once per month. Should I change out my carbon every 2 weeks or so?

LFS says that Phosguard is good for about a month.

The Green Anem just moved to that spot over night.

I was thinking of moving it to Sand bed. On the Left side of the Rock Scape, but then, it would be out of view :(

Since we 1st got this, it has always been placed where it is now.

Listen to the Kat & Mariaface - the blastomussa is being stung.

The bottom quarter of one member of my blastomussa garden gets brushed by the tips of one of my rock flower anemones when they both fully extend - I need to add about another inch of support rock to elevate the colony slightly but have been procrastinating.

Both the blasto & anemone look like hell in that tiny 1-2" section and awesome everywhere else. And that hell is exactly what your pics look like. Move the frag a couple inches away and I'l be seriously surprised if it doesn't improve quickly. Blastomussa are pretty hardy overall.

I say yes, switch out both carbon and phosguard every 2 weeks or less. Both of them are susceptible to bacterial film. Have you added any other corals to the tank in the past two weeks? Anything that'd release toxins? Anything that'd add more nutrients than you can export? Did your LFS give you the results for salinity, alk, cal, mag, phos, nitrate?

No, I did not ask for them, but she said that everything was good except Cal.

Only new addition was the Green Anem.. I Just placed the Blasto on the Sand bed.

I Just changed my Carbon out, like, 3 days ago? It is Time for the Phosguard too.

I am going to bring a water sample to be tested. Should I grab a sample before or after a Water change, T'day?

BTW...TY All for the quick responses.

Would you folks like to have a pic of the new placement? It is Under the AI Prime's Light, about 18 inches below.

By all means...useful forums thrive on before/after pics and concluding posts.

One of the most frustrating things when researching online for the fix to a problem you've run into is finding someone else who had it, and then not find out if what they were trying in their last post actually worked or not. ;)

Good luck!

You know, if I was the little blasto I would be cowering in fear. Nasty favia with sweepers in close proximity. Equally nasty elegance on one side lookin' at me funny. Anemones everywhere. Help me!

How much carbon are you running?

I've never really seen any sweepers on the Favia, Yet :huh:

Everything else looks fine so I'd say from experience just as Kat and everyone else says it's coral war. I watched my dozen heads of blasto nearly die from coral war.

Damn.

Yes, I believe I have been given very good advice. I Moved the Blasto...but, may have to move it again. Sadly, to an area that is hidden from view from the front of tank. As Kat has said, Elegance Eyeing it from 1 side and the Favia in front and the Nems "wandering" around. And for other Corals..I do have a nice Zoa garden area near the top right of Tank.

TY Markalot.

I will move to the left side. There is a little overhang I could place it under. Not completely under.

Lfs told me my blasto was close enough in species to be compatible with my rainbow acan when I was running out of floor space in the bc. I watched one head of the acan stretch out away from the colony like a trumpet towards the blasto. The entire left side of the blasto colony receded into the skeleton. War is hell.

Been 3 days since I moved the Blasto and it looks much better. Here is an Updated Picture.
