Water fill up

So. I used to use the Walmart ro/do machine. When I lived on one side of town. Never had any problems with it.

These walmarts don't have that machine.

I need to fill a 6G. Once sand and rock in there probably only need 4-5 gallons. Do you think I can use the 1 gallon distilled water jugs to fill it. Top off. Water change.

I don't have the option of buying a ro/di unit my land lord is....lets just say she's a not nice lady. She doesn't even want me to have a tank I had to hide it in the bed room. Lease states something about I can't mess with the plumbing at all even a leaky faucet or loose handles. her father has to do everything.

rodi systems have faucet adapters so you won't have to do any plumbing

This would work perfect and is small

I tried that. She said sure then you can go live in your car for breaking the lease.

Then I thought about using the outside hose faucet but it has a copper pipe.

She comes over every 3 days to check on termites and the plumbing. She'll eventually catch me using it behind her back.

Yep, that's what I did before I got my RO/DI unit. Distilled water is good, just less convenient and more expensive than making your own.

I also occasionally used to use those boxes of natural seawater at the big box pet stores. It was kind of convenient, but not all that economical.

Many homes use copper plumbing. The RO/DI unit will take care of any impurities.

Those boxes waters are so expensive. $20-$50 from when I saw them. I have no problem buying distilled jugs my systems only 6 gallons w/o rock and sand. What are they 79¢ a gallon/jug.

I would move....your landlord sounds like a gem

Most plumbing is copper your RO system will remove any copper impurities just don't use any copper post membrane

Pretty sure she is breaking the law inspecting your place every 3 day's. Seems excessive and I doubt she is looking for termites and the plumbing. Again I would move. And take her ass to court if she withholds deposit and such. Inspecting your place every 3 days is going way too far and is a violation of privacy. In California they have to give you notice prior to those types of inspections.

And the machine at wall mart is an RO not a RO/DI. Probably has a mineral stage and thus adding to the TDS. You are not getting 0 TDS water from that machine. The DI stage removes everything making the water not the best tasting they don't use a DI stage in those units. You are better off just using distilled water.

Every 3 days is very likely a violation of your right of "quiet enjoyment" Neither termite treatment or plumbing concerns warrant 2x weekly checks. Does she provide 24 hr written notice? Every state has laws that regulate this kind of abusive behavior by landlords.

Sound like an incredibly bad landlord.

OTOH RO/DI will remove any copper residue in the water. Copper piping is the most common material in home water systems.

Most LFS will sell RODI at $1 per gallon. Premixed saltwater is around $1.50 per gallon.

BUT, you really should not be hiding your tank from your landlord. If she is inspecting your place every 3 days, she's gonna find the fish tank eventually.

Well I have a loophole. It's not in the lease. It just her personal opinion. She's worried about it leaking on the carpets. Causing mold. I'll place one of those clear carpet mats under the stand and shut her up. Plus it's so small lol. Yeah I'm gonna call a few local stores asking for water. I already have salt mix. But I'm not ready to setup til next week. Waiting on shipment of LS.

lol... what the hell? I would be moving out so fast if they were coming over every 3 days. That would be so annoying. Privacy please!

Pretty sure she is breaking the law. I would take my deposit back too and more if I could get it cuz she sounds like an ass.

My landlord doesn't like fish tanks either, but they do let me keep them as long as I keep up my renters insurance.I use di water from my local Kroger, and although I've never tested the tds,it seems to be good water ,never any problems with it and it's under a buck a gallon like .86©

DI stands for deionized, not distilled. Distilled water is sometimes (but not often) abbreviated as DW. I'm not aware of any chain store selling deionized water. RO water is available at many stores, but it is not RO/DI. Sometimes minerals are added back into RO water for taste. Also, the vending machine RO units are not RO/DI and are sometimes poorly maintained. I tested 40ppm of nitrate from one of those machines.

Years ago, I used to get Catalina's Real Ocean water from Petco. It wasn't nearly that expensive. For awhile, I believe they had Petco branded boxed NSW. On their website, I found this: http://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/imagitarium-pacific-ocean-water

I've been using Wal-mart distilled water, for the past two months or so. Haven't had any issues and everything is super happy! You will be fine with it. I do however agree with everyone else I would find a new place to live. She sounds like a real see you next Tuesday.

She does know renters insurance does not cover damage caused by fish tanks?

Wow so many people to reply to lol. She gives me a 24/48hour notice. She doesn't come over 3 days I was being sarcastic. She comes like once a week to check the termite problem she had. That's only during summer. Winter she wants to come Check the plumbing I tell her I have the flu she gets s*** scared and stays away for months ?

Anyway I talked to her today. Explained why I need an aquarium it helps me with my depression. And that it's only 6 gallons. She said fine just try not to get the carpets wet I don't want mold growing under it or on the padding. I asked again about the rodi unit. The removable one. She said just get the permanent one and her father will install it. The portable one too much off and on friction will damage something.

Actually that's not bad. $10. LFS wants $1 a gallon so pretty much the same. But I gotta see if they have it in store. Thanks !

$40 for 4.4G is robbery lol

That's almost $10 a gallon. At $10 a gallon, the water in the oceans would be worth around $3,526,700,000,000,000,000,000 (or more than three and a half sextillion dollars).

At $10 a gallon you could pay for a reef quality RO/DI system in less than 15 gallons and be able to make many hundreds of gallons before it needs and filter replacements. The average cost nationwide to make your own RO/DI water including filter replacements, water and sewer rates is a nickel a gallon. Even with a 6 gallon system it could pay for itself in a year or less.

That pre boxed saltwater is a such a rip off. No idea how they get anyone to buy it.

Usually cheaper to make your own in the long run, only hurdle is the initial cost but of all the equipment I have the RO/DI was 2nd least expensive so in the big picture not a huge issue.

Most Walmarts are removing the machines because Walmart employees aren't the ones who do the maintenance. Its an outsourced water company they rely on to do maintenance. When it happens is variable.

Just use distilled water, a lot of ppl do with no issues.

I myself cannot do any plumbing in my apartment nor will break my lease for a tank. Its a binding contract and not worth the legal fees/court time.

That being said, in most places the law requires documented 24hrs notice of entry(with a purpose for entry) into your unit unless it is for emergency purposes. Monitoring you is not an emergency nor is entering every 3 days.
