RO Buddie

Being away from the hobby for quite a few years I forgot a lot of things. I just picked up a 50g RO Buddie for my JBJ 28g cube. I know it'll take some time to exhaust the membrane, I don't remember how to know when the membrane and carbon needs changing.

Sorry to see you already picked up that unit without doing more research. Pretty low end and poor performance in the long run and ends up costing much more than a real reef quality RO/DI that only costs about $112 and uses standard size 10" filters and has a refillable 20 oz vertical DI.

To answer your question though you replace the sediment and carbon filters every 6 months like clockwork, you change the RO membrane when the rejection rate drops to where the cost of DI replacements exceeds the cost of a new membrane and your replace the DI filter when the TDS is anything other than 0 TDS using a good ATC handheld TDS meter.

So I guess that it's less cost effective and efficient because of it's size? I read all good review on the RO Buddie. I HAD a 4 or 4 stage RODI unit when I had my bigger tank years ago. I went with this one because of it's compact size and the reviews I read. Thanks for the advice.

i picked up an RO buddy during my FW days (without the DI) but ended up purchasing the DI for reef a few months later. it's served it's purpose but there are better options out there (as mentioned up above) and i would suggest you do not get the RO buddy.

i'm nearing the point where i need to purchase a new DI membrane ($25) and i can't stomach it. comparing something a 5 stage BRS filter kit landing at $35 with 10 times the quality vs RO buddy, you do the math.

I just figured this into would be ideal because I wouldn't be needing to filter a lot of water considering it's only being used on a 28 gallon tank. And I read so many good reviews about it. I should've looked into ileeviews on here first.
