I get my water from the ocean in La Jolla, CA...the local aquarium uses water from the ocean for their systems and set up a spigot for the public to use.

Had a few little pieces of seaweed in the last batch we got. Pretty interesting!

RO/DI or distilled. Either from the LFS or the grocery store. I would never trust city water or well water for corals.

Bottled gallons. If you read the fine print a lot of them are RO and I have found a couple that are RO/DI. I always test with a TDS meter though to confirm they are good before I use them. And I always research bottling companies to ensure that they don't use old copper pipes in the distillation process.

But I should say more frequently I use distilled from the store and RO/DI from the LFS. It's easier.

Well currently I am using the distilled water from Great value... its distilled and RO. I don't have a bottle of the other stuff. I wish I had it on hand. I get it at Walmart or Giant Eagle

Come get some water during MACNA! I'm happy to show everyone where the spigot is!

Not sure how getting the 100 five gallon buckets on a plane is gonna work. The free ocean water might end up being more expensive than the RO stuff I get from the store.

has anyone else ever used RO bottled water before?

Bottles drinking water has minerals added for taste. No good. Distilled water out of gallon jugs is absolutly fine. You can call any water company and ask for their spreadsheets that show every thing you could think of that is in their water.

Distilled water and Rodi water is the exact same thing. It is just 2 different ways to get to the same destination. :)

I read distilled water can be really bad because it comes in contact with copper tubing

Was your source recent? Copper piping seems like old technology.

I used distilled on my first tank without issue, used RO also but tested it because some places RO isn't very good quality if they don't change the filters on time.

Y don't u finish the conversation in the threads you already started on this same subject. There have now been three in three days

First was my corals aren't growing

Second was about nitrates

And now about ro water.

All of this has been discussed in not only your first but also your second thread. And now it seems a third was needed. This person is wasting our time.

Edit there's actually four threads you started that all discuss this since you became a member a yesterday.

you wasted your own time bitching about it ?

No I didn't. I wasted my time thinking I was helping a new member bu than realized this is the same person asking the same questions in different threads like u expect different answers. This is a small community and All these questions have been answered in your other threads that are currently active. Your wasting people's time.

I wish we had that kind of access to ocean water.... If I ever do live in San Diego again, I know where I am getting my water..lol

smeagol108, that's a wee bit harsh. He's starting multiple threads to get answers to specific questions. Yes, those questions were answered in the original thread, but it's never a bad idea to seek confirmation of advice given. Moreover, since he doesn't yet have a decent nitrate test, finding out what the nitrate levels are for different types of water is a useful step (spoiler alert: well water can have very low or very high nitrates, depending on your source water).

Rottingsoul - you may want to start a tank thread, detailing your setup and what you've done so far. This community is very willing to help, but the more information you can give them, the better. And make changes slowly - your livestock will thank you. :)

Nah just build a massive pipeline from the end of the pier, way cheaper

Don't worry about all the threads.

Sometimes it takes a few to gather a good amount of responses.

Better to ask questions and many than to worry about wasting others time.

That is so freaking cool.

As far as water source - many reefers end up getting a RO/DI setup eventually- That's what I have and love it. as far as I understand, 0 TDS means there is nothing in it, aka nothing to worry about
