Do return pumps get quieter over time?

Or have any reccomendations for a quiet return pump less than 300gph? Put a new Eheim 1000 in the sump yesterday and it has a hum to it. Woke up this morning and it was louder.

Most pumps are gonna have a hum to them. Especially when they are sitting on a hard surface inside an amplifier(tank/sump). They usually quiet down after a few days to weeks. However, if they are loud enough to wake you, I'm not sure they'll ever quiet down that much.

A couple of suggestions for quieting a pump down.

If it's hard plumbed, try adding a short section of nylon, or silicone hose between the pump and pipe.

Try a rubber or foam pad under the pump

Try suspending the pump in the return chamber. If that's not clear, I mean cut the return line shorter, so the pump is actually hanging by the return line.

I'm using silicone hose for the return. The pump isn't touching any walls. I'll try a pad underneath see what that does. I'll give it a couple weeks and see what happens.

Pumps also get quieter after some biofilm growth inside. Too much growth, though, will compromise the output so it's a balancing act.

If you're using the aqueon tank as a sump then you need to fill the gap between the black trim and the bottom glass with a cloth or foam then put the whole sump on another piece of foam or yoga mat, it'll make your sump dead silence.

Put a couple small pieces of silicone hose underneath the pump and it's much better than it was.

i used a rubber mat and placed it under mine and it's dead silent
