Astinus Posted July 27, 2016 Share Posted July 27, 2016 The rock that has the nice colony of Zoas, on the under side of the rock there is a LARGE, looks slimy, yellow stuff. I am guessing it is a Sponge. And on the same rock, on the left side that gets some light, it looks Purplish Red. The question I have, Should I be concerned about this growth? It seemed to have grown quickly. Last time I took a fairly close look at it, there seemed to be a Bubble coming out of it. Due to location and lighting, it is very difficult to try and get a picture of. If necessary, I can try and get a pic. Would love to hear what folks say and think. Thank you all. Link to comment

This is Yellow, but because of Lighting and Camera...well, here are some pics, not too good, but, here it is. Here are some pics of the Zoas. I am not happy. I seem to be losing them. Don't know why. Many lfs won't test calcium and alkalinity without asking, or paying a buck or two per test. Reason being is they use up a lot of the reagent. Once you've confirmed your cal and alk, it's time to start looking for other reasons. Most notably, nudis. However, there are a few others to look for as well. Sundial snails and sea spiders. Hmm..LFS does test for Cal and Alk. I Dose this every other day. I have had these Zoas for quite some time. *See my Build Thread* I am fairly certain I do not have the Spider, I had Googled them before this. Someone Mentioned them in another thread somewhere. I Haven't added anything that would introduce a Nudi. Just Added a re stock of CUC from Reef Cleaners. TY for mentioning the Sundial. Just Googled them, I haven't seen these in our Tank and Haven't seen anything bothering the Zoas. I did think that maybe, because the Duncans are close to and touching a couple of the Zoas. Duncans are s'posed to be "Peaceful". The only thing I can think of regarding Cal and Alk, I may have over done it with a dose. I did have an issue with Nitrates and was dosing NO3:PO4-X (Nopox). Again, this may have been over done and I stopped using it every day. I dose 1ML for a Bi Cube 28. I Have an API Test kit..can get a quick test done. In regards to sponges, I know they're a good thing, but, was asking in case there may be a "Bad" sponge to watch out for. TY for the replies so far Link to comment
RayWhisperer Posted July 27, 2016 Share Posted July 27, 2016 No bad sponges that I know of. Not that I know everything. Sea spiders are usually tiny and nocturnal. The chances of you finding one are pretty slim. Lemme correct that. The sea spiders that would be preying upon zoas or other softies. Same goes for nudis. You'd be lucky to actually see one. Especially since they take on the color of the zoa they are feeding on. Sundials range in size. If you find a snail similar, don't just kill it. Colonista snails are often confused for sundials. Check your cal and alk yourself. And never dose anything without testing for it. If you've had these a while now without issue, and haven't added anything. I suspect your alkalinity is too low. Others swear by liugols, or other iodine treatments. Whatever way you go, if that's the problem, it will take several treatments. Link to comment
Astinus Posted July 28, 2016 Author Share Posted July 28, 2016 TY for that Link. In that Link, The 2nd Image, struck me. When I Moved the Zoa Garden and flipped it over, I thought I saw a Majano. So I pulled it out. It was small. After I removed it, I took a tooth brush and scrubbed out the hole that it was in. Looking at the 2nd picture in that Link, I am having 2nd thoughts. It could have been a Nudi!. Link to comment
Clown79 Posted July 28, 2016 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Are there white spots on the polyps? You could have zoa pox. Very hard to see but decimate zoas quickly. Get a magnify glass, blow the zoas with a turkey baster to close them up. Check for white tiny polka dots. Link to comment

Any kind of help/info is truly appreciated. Doing a Nitrate test ATM...Looks like I am at 20. Will dose some Nopox. Link to comment

Your nitrates are a little high, a water change will correct that but finding the source of nutrients will help control the nitrates. If you have zoa pox, there is only 1 treatmrnt that works and it must be done out of the dt. Furan 2 Link to comment
