ADVICE ON PROJECT HEX TANK

So I know Hexagon Tanks are NOT ideal for reef tanks.... I get it.. All the LFS guys tell me to just chunk it.

But I do see a lot of successful good looking reef Hex's on this site and on youtube.

It's really a project fix'er upper. I got the tank and stand for dirt cheap and I cleaned it up so I want to set it up.

It's either 35-40 gallons. The guy wasn't sure and I won't know till I fill it up I guess?

I just want input and opinions as far as equipment goes.

-I was thinking an AquaClear 70 with the In-tank Media basket (filter floss, purigen, chemipure-elite)

-A jager 100 or 150 watt heater?

-Some sort of protien skimmer? I know nothing about these so I could really use suggestions...

-Do I need an Overflow box?

-I'm not going to do a sump. I know I should but I'm still new and I don't want to deal with all that extra stuff.

-Thinking maybe a Jaebo Controller? maybe 2 power heads? one at the top and one at the bottom since the tank is tall? 25.5 inches tall

-Going to do live sand. How much?

-Live rock. No clue how much?

-Lighting? Something that will penetrate deep obviously. Not going to do any really difficult corals.

Any input or advice would be appreciated!

thanks friends!

Has anyone specified why hex isn't good to use?

Take measurements of the tank and then check them out here:

That will help ith the gallon issue.

Sand- 1.5 lbs per gallon is a general idea of how much you need.

LR- 1-1.5 lbs per gallon is a general idea of what you need.

You don't have to do a sump. Skimmer can wait if you want/need one.

I got a Api Superclean hob, it has 2 intakes and a surface skimmer- its helped so much with keeping my surface spotless. You can use any media in it. The flow is very strong and completely adjustable.

I like it better than the aquaclears. Used every hob filter. The Api supercleans and Aquaclears are the best.

If you're using it for chemical filteration a hob for 30-50g should be fine because the biological filteration is your liverock.

Lighting may be tricky because its most likely a deeper tank.

Coral compulsion par 38 - the 35 watt is full spectrum, dimmable it does 24x24- nt sure about depth.

Chinese led box like mars aqua, nanobox, t5's

Definitely look into how deep the light can penetrate.

Your could build your rockwork in such a way that changes the depth of where the corals will be placed which will help with the lighting

Nothing prevents a hex from making a good reef tank, I had a 20g hex running for awhile, it worked just as good as any glass box that holds water.

I used a reef breeders value led on it for lighting.

You will probably want 2 part epoxy to help hold some rocks together since aquascaping is more difficult.

Sand: 0.5 to 1 inch depth

Live rock: Can generally do as much or little as you want, you just want good water flow everywhere.

I was curious as to why too. I suspect for the lfs its the same reason why one can't do a reef unless it over 55g!

Enjoy your tank. Other than lighting a deeper tank, you will be fine :)
