squamptonbc
For those in Canada who used live rock where did you get it? Local fish store, shipped in? And what kind? I am not impressed with the Real Reef Rock Artificial stuff J & L now sell which is a shame as they used to have lots of nice quality stuff. Aquariums West in Vancouver isn't very good, and not worth 10/lb and was majorly infected with Aptasia. I am in BC so looking for either a store in Alberta I can drive to, or one that ships. But for all I know the live rock of the past may not even be available in Canada, I don't mind aquacultured if its done in the ocean, but the stuff done in tanks, just is devoid of life and the purple dye/paint looks fake to my eyes. Clown79
I live in Ontario. I got mine at a LFS for my 15g. Can't remember the kind of LR. I did dry rock in my 10g with a small piece of LR to cycle it. Other than J&L I'm not sure what out West. Try Reefsupplies.ca - can't imagine they won't ship from Quebec Link to comment
squamptonbc
I am not sure if its Canada wide, but marine fish keeping seems to be losing popularity out here, well Aquariums in general. We used to have a local fish store, lots of fresh and saltwater, and now all we have are 2 chain stores that carry only the most basic of freshwater and limited supplies, the LFS closed up shop a couple of years ago. There was at least another marine store in Metro Vancouver, but they closed up shop as well but can't recall their name. Seems a few on Vancouver Island have closed up as well. And forums like Canreef are all but ghost towns now. I'll have to try emailing reef supplies again, I did email a month or 2 back about shipping costs, but never got a reply, I live in Ontario. Clown79
I entered the hobby in 2007- there were tons of stores...not so much now. The hobby has died here. Its too expensive, not just set up but buying water, hydro costs etc etc make it's really hard for ppl to have aquariums. Link to comment
Finhead1
I actually bought all my live rock from a tank shut down.(Facebook buy and sell group) I got back into the hobby (12 year break) wtih buying a 5 year old established biocube a lady had neglected a bit. (Kijiji) There are a ton of shut downs and sales of reefs, should have no problems finding LR. Join the Facebook Group near your area. Link to comment
fishfreak0114
Have you looked at eco live rock? I considered buying this for my tank but I wasn't patient enough for the weather to warm for it to be shipped http://www.ecoliverock.org Instead I got tukani and takota rock from reef supplies. It pretty much froze on the long trip to my tiny town Link to comment
squamptonbc
I have but I am wary of this tank aqua cultured rock, the stuff J & L has is the same sort of thing, artificial and tank aquaculture and other then bacteria devoid of life. I check kjiji, craigslist, and canreef daily, and posted a looking for ad a couple weeks ago, so its a search in progress, just been several weeks now, and I want to get this tank started....lol I've heard King Ed's may have decent live rock, although pricey, but if they do, they might be the only option in the region, which may explain the high price...lol Link to comment

Its too expensive, not just set up but buying water, hydro costs etc etc make it's really hard for ppl to have aquariums. We never had a ton of options. but back in that time frame it was far easier to find things, and good live rock was all over, now seems the trend is artificial and tanked aquacultured which grows the bacteria but is largely devoid of any other life forms, and of course the painted purple color is ugly and considering it costs more then the live rock of the past did, its also a rip off. I have one tank running where I used dry rock, but just not happy with the look, and miss the life forms you would get with live rock that brought together the tank in my view. Yes the pests were a pain, but the benefits outweighed the risks. Link to comment
Clown79
I agree. I prefer LR to dry rock. My 15g was set up using a large portion of LR and my 10g was largely dry rock- the 15g has more diversity, a ton of coralline, and the system runs smoother. Not to mention it cycled it 2 weeks! Link to comment
squamptonbc
I found some wild harvest live rock from Fiji or Reef Project 2.0 cultured rock which appears that it's cultured in the ocean and not tanks. Going to go look at it today. I agree. squamptonbc
I ended up with a 8 pound piece of Walt Smith's ocean cultured rock, and roughly 2 pound piece of PUKANI ROCK also from Walt Smith for 4.50/lb which is way cheaper then retail prices, and they have never been in a home aquarium. A wholesaler of the rock that is downsizing and relocating was having a bit of a moving sale, so for what is available at the stores locally, this is about as good as one can ask and get around these parts. *price in local currency, roughly 3.40/lb in US Currency* Link to comment
