I started reading that I should have cleaned my dry rock I got at the store. There was definitely some black spots on the rock. So being that I was only four days in on my cycle I decided to pull them and acid wash them. Well,..... the acid completely eat away the rock. They lost most of their weight. Now Im not sure if I should use them. To top it off they still have those black spots and smell like muriatic acid. What do you guys think. Should I use these rocks? are they to porous now? I want to grow coral. Please give me your thoughts.

I have a 10 gallon. I left the saltwater and sand in the tank. Should I have changed sand? or can I keep it?

I just want to get this going. I don't mind waiting the time to cycle and didn't get live rock cause those rocks looked all slimy and stuff.

Rock is not too porous, that's actually a good thing. Try soaking it in a bucket of saltwater for just a little while just to get the smell out of it. I don't think it will hurt your tank, and you don't have any livestock to worry about yet.

But do you think those black spots could cause problems for me in the future, or would the acid have taken care of anything that could cause harm?

The black spots will cause a whole lot less stress than my "semi cured" rock with lots of dead sponges.

On a side note u know how to make the pesky neighbor disappear .

Those black spots could just be the rock itself. If you cant scrape it off then it shouldn't be anything that can harm your tank. I would find out if the acid will hurt the tank and if so figure out how to get it out of the rock and then use that beauty.

You are overthinking things, the tank isn't THAT fragile.

If you still like the rock, I would still use it. The black spots are no big deal. I would soak the rock in rodi or something though if it still smells like acid.

BTW, if you go read your pH should be <insert # here>, don't add pH buffer, never add pH buffer. There. I just saved you from the most common mistake new people to the hobby make.

Thanks for all the comments. I think I will soak the rock and use them. I also wish I would have just left them in the tank, but moving forward now.

The biggest issue I find is ppl over thinking and over reacting. It leads to difficulties.

Like Tamberav said.

It looks like holy texas rock.

If you like the rock, soak/rinse/repeat.

Ppl chasing and buffering ph- leads to problems. Ph changes throughout a 24hr period. Photosynthesis effects ph.

Its very simple to cycle a tank. Livesand, liverock, water.

With dry rock, add a piece of LR and watch the tank cycle.

I like the look of holy rock. It looks really nice in tanks.

Its more dense than LR, it offers less biological filteration but others use it in their reefs.

Many use it as base rock.

Adding a small piece or 2 of LR should help with the biological filteration.

I used tufta rock and LR in my old 55g with no issues.

I have some pieces of holy rock in my bc 14 although it doesn't look as good as the one going into this tank!there were actually employees at my lfs telling me I couldn't use holy rock in saltwater.finally two other employees settled the debate and I went with it,although it made me question weather my tank would be messed up causing me to overreact to everything going on in my tank you and a col others helped me get through the ugly phase of my tank,so a big thanks to all of you!
