IM Nuvo 10g sucking fish up.

Ok guys, I can't figure this out. I have a Nuvo 10g and I can't figure out how my little nano fish are getting in the chambers in the back. I have this set up as a fresh tank right now, yes I know this is a reef site but you guys have the most experience with this tank. I have a sponge jammed in the intake but they still manage to get back there. I can't figure out if that's where the getting in - they would have to go through 3 stage filtration and then over the baffle wall and end up in the pump chamber. I don't really see that happening. These are very small scarlet badis and galaxy rasbora's that are getting back there. I've checked the seams and can't find any gaps. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Jumping over the back wall? My clown was more than capable..

Maybe - but I don't think so. These fish are the size of a guppy and would have to jump straight up and over. Plus the screen top sit on top of the tank, there is no gap for them to fit through.

The stock lids do leave quite a gap if you have it pushed completely to one side, depending how small the fish are. Otherwise with non-intank baskets there is also a gap that would allow them to bypass the three stage.

You'd be surprised what a determined fish is capable of. If they're that small, they can even get through the spacing in the stock lid, can't they? They don't necessarily have to be perpendicular to the gap between the lid and acrylic, since they'll usually swim along the wall sideways before jumping over. And jumping straight up and over isn't as difficult as you'd think; my clown has jumped and landed on the lights, just half an inch over, which was a horrible few seconds of my life.

Thanks guys, i appreciate al the feed back. Doesn't sound like there is much I can do if what y'all say is going on. I get tired of getting those guys out of the back, it's a huge pain in the ass. Every day I have to turn the pump off and fish the little fishes out. The back of the tank is not designed for that and it's a pain.

You could ask someone like artfully acrylic (sponsor on the forum) for a better-fitting lid? They may be able to put finer spacing between the mesh on top, as well as a lip that rests over the entire top of the tank so there are zero gaps.

+1 better fitting lid. I have green banded gobies which are tiny and I had to account for the same thing including mesh size.

You might want to try blocking the edges with tape just to see if they still appear back there, if not, you know that gap is the problem.

If the lid turns out to be the problem, you and buy a custom lid or DIY one using window screening frame and buying tiny mesh, I got some tiny nylon mesh off amazon, its actually mosquito netting, the traditional 1/4 inch stuff was too big.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to start with putting a piece of tape alone the back gap and just keep an eye on it and alleviate causes and then fix them one by one.

Thanks again,

On all my innovative marine tanks I have the fish guard which goes over the intakes for the overflows, this is because my clown slid into the refugium I have in my sump when it was a baby. If you don't have this it is cheaper than a custom lid and solved my issue, perhaps it would solve yours. the guard does slow surface skimming(if not stops it) and can clog with algae/detritus but regular cleaning and occasionally sliding it to the side stops those issue. Search "fish guard" it will come up they work

The fish guard will help if they're getting in through the overflow, for sure! I have two, and will likely put them to use if I get teeny tiny fish any time soon. If they're genuinely jumping over the back wall, the tape will hopefully fix that for a while and then you'll know you need a custom lid.

So, I didn't get any fish in the back last night after I put the tape up. 1 night isn't a true test so I will give it another night or 2. Also something I forgot because I haven't had any in a while but I used to have cherry shrimp in the tank and they would get in the back as well. I don't see them jumping so maybe it's a mix of both escapes routes. The fish are jumping and the shrimp through the overflow. Maybe??

Hey GraniteReefer - did your fish that went through the overflow make it all the way to the pump chamber? Or did you just find them in the first overflow chamber?

First overflow chamber, most likely because that was the refugium and at the time I had a sponge restricting access to the section with the pump so chaeto wouldn't overflow and clog the pump. I seriously think the fish guard is your solution. My thought is that if it were the gap or improper mesh size on the stock lid 75% of the time a fish jumped it would be on a side not leading to the sump right? Also since my refugium was in the overflow and it has an alternating light schedule I think that was attractive to the fish during the night as I never had the issue on the opposing sides overflow in my IM40

Just an update - I got the fish guard and with that and the tape on the back I haven't had any little guys in any chambers. I will look in to a custom lid but until then a strip of scotch tape along the back is working. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Thanks for the link, my issue is I have an extra power head in the tank because the stock pump stinks and the cord is sticking out of the top. I was thinking about upgrading the pump but Ive heard so many options I kinda got overwhelmed. Any suggestions? Ive read the Rio 800 and the MJ 900. Are those good choices?

I think Sicce is coming out with a nano line, or already did, but I have the Sicce Syncra Silent 1.5 on my Fusion 20?

You can cut a notch in the corner pieces (they are plastic). This is what I did on my tanks for the cords. Also you can get everything much cheaper at a hardware store, except the netting, but you can buy netting separate.

It is the same stuff people use to make screen windows but with bird netting instead.

I think the poster was likely referring to the VorTech MP10 but they are pricey so not for the budget oriented..

Sorry for my ignorance but is this the zoomed micro pump?

I'm currently working on an upgrade for my IM10 return pump as well, I was considering either a Sicce syncra .5 or 1.0. I have an MP10 on my 40 and I think it would be wasted money for a 10 gallon, because it would literally blow the water out of the tank on a majority of setting. I just use my koralia 240. If it's your only tank and you want that cool factor I could get behind the MP10 though, and it would be viable in a larger tank where as later a koralia would be best for mixing water. Glad to hear you got the fish guard
