How do I know if I have dinos?

So,my week of bad luck has turned into two weeks of bad luck! Trying not to complain and sound whiney I've lost three shrimp, two were new and died hours after they seemed to be acclimated and doing well.the third was a peppermint shrimp I've had for 9 months and I woke up Sunday and he was dead.now I have a brown "stringy" algae that looks like a pic I saw of dinos.now my kindle won't upload pics to share and I just shattered my cell phone, lol it seems that the snails in our tank have eaten some of its very slimy and just on the back of my bc 14 gallon.I sucked a bunch of it out and did a second water change.hoping for the best but expecting the worst, conducting water parameters check in a few minutes.

Probably just cyano, but it could be dinos. Sometimes it's hard to tell which without a microscope. I suspect the deaths have something to do with it.

Interesting seabass,so do you think they died due to it being dinosaurs?or cyno?or could it be the result of either one? Other than removing it,and water changes, how do I fight this?the tank is only around 3 months old,I'd hate to lose the tank.

Yeah, could just be cyano. Sometimes cyano traps bubbles and can look like dinos.

There is a method used to determin if you have dinos or cyano. It involves taking a samled and shaking it in water, then straining it back into a cup..

I would need to google it and find the article I am talking about.. hold on

thank you!

I think the deaths probably caused the cyano, and not the other way around. Yeah siphoning it out is the best option. Keep up on your maintenance. However, to confuse things, water changes aren't recommended for dinos.

Looks like it all comes down to having a positive identification of exactly what I have in my tank which is also confusing, lol I think ill just keep an eye on it and if it is just cyno maybe my water change and removal of the Cyno will result in l less or no Cyno lol,if it keeps getting worse I guess I could cut the lights for about 3 days?

I'd say be pro active. either one can get out of control quickly. lights out will help with both.

While lights out may be a treatment for both, I can indeed confirm I'd rather have cyano over dinos any time. My brief however ugly battle with cyano went along the lines of siphoning out as much I could and keeping nutrients out of the water best I could while letting the light cycle run for about only 4 hours total.

Dinos on the other hand had me yanking my hair out for a few months. I tried every single remedy I could find on the interwebs that was doable with what equipment I had. After about 2 months going on 3 I did the unthinkable. The one remedy I did not want to try. I did not feed my fish, I did not change the water and I did not let ANY LIGHT WHAT SO EVER in the tank. I turned off all the lights and hung double layered towels over the entire tank except my overflow to allow for gas exchange. I did that for about 2-3 weeks. Your fish will survive if you have any but your corals, if you have any, may suffer. I lost maybe 3 corals out of 16 but I can say I didn't see another dino.

What I did may not work for you. Some might find my remedy cruel or what have you. All I can say is it worked.

wow that sounds like a tough battle indeed!I hope I don't need to do that, but if I do I will for sure!thank you for the advice!so did you leave the towels on the whole 2_3 weeks?did you not feed the fish for 2-3 weeks?just want to make sure that if I have to do it I want to do it right.what other kind of treatment did you try?

The dinos I had liked light. They were photosynthetic so keeping the tank pitch black was priority 1. Not feeding the fish was nutrient control but now that I slept on it, I fed them a few times actually. Only at night under lunar LEDs. I also dosed H202 but I am unsure if they helped at all since I went lights out along with it.

Thanks for the info,as of midnight this morning I dosed peroxide, and wrapped a blanket around the tank to block all light,I'm going to try the 72 hour rout and see if it works.the sin is were only on a small patch on the back of the tank but on the sand also.but nothing was on the rocks or corals yet,but I'm hoping this works!

It's been about 24 hours since I've started the battle with what I believe are dinoflagellets, this is where my patience is an issue,I wanted it fixed yesterday, lol but I'm going to wait the whole 72 hours, this is a new tank and I'm not just going to let it go to pieces without trying,I'm in it for the long haul,.now if I could just work on my patience, lol

mine is cyano hell. I'm a procrastinator and worry too much before I take a step. I hope that you have luck in your battle!!!

I plan on upgrading soon. Please don't tell the dino police.

do you have tank pictures?

I wish I did have pics, along with the bad news of my tank,I broke my cell phone and my kindle decided it won't upload pics onto the forum anymore, lol,I was very nervous when I first took action,I held the peroxide in my hands for about ten minutes before I dosed it,lol.but I bought the tank for my wife and she seemed disappointed so I had to take drastic action, but I'm just praying we beat it,I'm just trying to be positive if the 72 hours of no light fails ill go to five days and keep dosing until we win! But my being impatient is an issue,

.well,,,,,,,my battle with what I believe are dinos isn't going as planned.I've had lights out for about 72 hours and after removing the blanket due to high outside temps making it hotter in my house I had to remove the blanket.upon observing the tank,I think the dinos have somewhat shrunk a bit on my back panel, but not as much as I would have liked.I'm not sure about the sand because the lights have been out for three days now and it always disappears after lights have been out, since its been a cpl hours short of the total 72 hours all I have on is the night lights.ill know more tomorrow after I start the light cycle back up,I'm open for suggestions if anyone has any ideas?

Thanks seabass!I actually did one ml of peroxide once a day all three days,my wife and I took a good hard look at the tank and we decided it does look noticeably better after my last dose of peroxide which I put in right before I took the blanket off so I'm marginally excited!lol I'm not sure if the sand bed looks better yet I'll know more tomorrow when the day lights are due to be turned back on.my next question is should I run a shorten my total daytime lights by a few hours and run them the first day for like a maximum of a col hours and build back up over the next few days or just go b back to everything as normal right away?good news is I think it's working!!
