Sal10104
so my new Naso tang from exotic reef imports is showing velvet. Im assuming the stress that its in is that its in a 20 long QT tank. the tang is 3 inches. i did notice i had 0.50 ammonia level. I did a 60% water change and he is starting to try to swim so i think he is getting better. he is resting in a pvc pipe. i have the lights off to stress him the least possible. any recommendations on what i should do further? I should have mentioned that i lowered the salinity to 1.015 to help increase oxygen levels and burst the velvets Link to comment
Sal10104
keep getting him back up and he is starting to fight me. (I'm wearing gloves while doing this so i don't get oils on him) Link to comment

Travisgause
keep getting him back up and he is starting to fight me. (I'm wearing gloves while doing this so i don't get oils on him) I would recommend keeping your hands out of the tank. You have the lights off as not to stress him, but every time you place your hands in the tank and touch him you are adding stress. Link to comment
Tamberav
What medication are you treating him with? Hyposalinity doesn't work for velvet. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-07/sp/feature/index.php so my new Naso tang from exotic reef imports is showing velvet. I guess I'm kinda over reacting. but he is now losing the stress markings and starting to swim a little bit, he now can keep himself upright. i turned off the pumps and added an Airstone because he keeps getting sucked up against the pump Link to comment

Just bring it up a few points, raising it too fast would only cause more stress and this fish needs treatment today. Waterchange to bring it up a few points and start treatment, this is what I would do if it were my fish. Good luck. Do NOT dose prime with cupramine. This is also unsafe. Hyperactivity isn't a good sign either but you have the med so try your best. Good luck. alrightnot any more. i just saw him jump like 6inches out of the water. he is doing a lot better now. Clown79
I'm sorry about the fish loss. Unfortunately we can get parasites from any fish sold in any store. Link to comment
StinkyBunny
You could have gotten a fish with velvet from ANYONE. Tangs get ich and velvet, it's a fact of life. I bet in 35 years of keeping marine fish I could count on 2 hands the number of tangs I've gotten that never broke with ich or velvet and those were a Sohal, Purple, Scopas, Sailfin and Yellow. You need to anticipate it and deal with it quickly when it happens. Link to comment
Tamberav
+1, a lot of the fish are wild caught, the suppliers don't have any control over the parasites in the ocean. Link to comment
