vegasgundog
So today was moving day, from my bc29 to the rsm e260. Everything seemed to go well. I turned the pumps on and all the brittle stars stuck their arms straight out through the rocks. I started to panic thinking they were going to die and my tank was crashing. Then they ALL crawled out and promptly began to spawn. I never ever saw this in the bc the 2 years I had it up. Link to comment
masssnapz
Wow that's cool. How many do you think are in the rocks. Link to comment
vegasgundog
I want to say in excess of two dozen. I always see them feeding, but never see thier bodies. I couldnt believe how big some of them are! Link to comment
uwdanno
So strange. Mine all spawned last night too. Wonder if the calendar is a trigger??? Link to comment
vegasgundog
Hmm interesting maybe so. Link to comment
HarryPotter
I wouldn't think the calendar effects spawning in this day and age where we control lighting and temperature year long, no? Link to comment
mystersyster
I wouldn't think the calendar effects spawning in this day and age where we control lighting and temperature year long, no? Probably right Dirty Harry. My hypothesis is that it was enduced from the stress of moving, much like anemones might split from stress. Link to comment

Moon cycles trigger events in the wild even on a cloudy night. Phases of the moon have different gravitational effects. Link to comment
RayWhisperer
I know, I'm 3 weeks too late. I don't venture out here much, these days. Anyways, I'm sure it has something to do with the lunar phase, as coral mass spawnings do. Seeing this reminded me of this happening here before. That got me thinking, find that thread and match the date. Well, no matching date, but not too far off. This one happened in late August, yours in early July.... Somethings gotta synch up here..... http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/131093-my-brittle-stars-spawned/ Link to comment
RayWhisperer
In 07, when this happened before, the moon was waxing at 91.68% full. Now, I just have "posted 3 weeks ago" as a time stamp on the OP's post. Get an exact date, and we might have something to work with. Link to comment

As in this minute, 8:50pm. How's the moon? Link to comment
RayWhisperer
Waning, 77% gibbous, smart ass. Anywho, WWM suggests it's primarily water quality, light cycles and food availability as contributing factors to micro brittle mass spawnings. I'm not completely sold on that. Especially since we have 2 documented spawnings on the same night, in 2 separate parts of the country. Now, it unlikely, but plausible, they have the same lighting schedule. It still seems too coincidental. A quick Google search shows reported spawning events almost monthly.... Perhaps it is lunar influenced, perhaps it's a monthly occupancy, and most just never notice it.... I dunno. Link to comment
RayWhisperer
Stupid autocorrect... Occurrence, not occupancy... Link to comment

vegasgundog
Went back to my gallery and I took the pictures on June 28th. Last week all my margarita snails spawned too. I didn't take pictures of that. Figure it could be a combination of everything happening all at one time. They didn't die off after the spawn so I don't think it was a bad event. I noticed baby cerith snails on the back wall, seems lots of hanky Panky going on in my rsm. Link to comment
