Red sea coral pro

I used to use IO salt but changed to their Reef Crystals. Not really pleased, it offers higher Ca but my magnesium constantly drops, especially after a water change.

Mon my magnesium was 1230 and after my 15% water change, it dropped to 1200.

I have been fighting with magnesium for 3 mnths.

I'm thinking of switching salts.

Anyone have comparisons of these salts?

I'd highly recommend H2Ocean salts. Locally, Reef Crystals were costing me ~$75 and H2Ocean is $90 so not much more if you average the difference over a few months. A few things worth noting, Reef Crystals are incredibly variable when it comes to the resulting parameters from each batch where as H2Ocean are bang on - you might buy a bin of RC w that mixes 480ppm calcium then 420 the next. H2Ocean is a lot finer and mixes more readily, I'd say I also noticed my corals gain a little more pop / color when I made the transition. Oh and one last thing... Using a refractometer it takes 5 cups of H2Ocean to make 5 gallons of 1.25 SG saltwater where as Reef Crystals required about 5.75 cups. One of the most important upgrades to make in my opinion. If you keep lps or sps get off of Reef Crystals!!

Thank you for all the info. I really appreciate it.

I will definitely look into the salt. I need to see if I can get it here.

I had a feeling the RC was my issue and when an essential element is lowering after water changes, that is confirmation. We do wc's to replenish the elements, not remove them.

Some ppl seem to have success with RC but others have the same issues as I.

My numbers dropped mnths ago and I had very few corals- now I have a lot. I plan on adding an sps and lps.

I am definitely switching salts, its finding a good one thats available here.

i was using coral pro but over time the alkalinity was pissing off my coral and they weren't opening all the way, I switched to Aquaforest probiotic reef salt and polyp extension is way better and they are more puffy than before

I like Red Sea Coral Pro. On my 2nd large bucket. Corals always seem happier post water change

i think on behalf of Harry his tank is fully stocked so the elevated levels are great, my tank on the other hand has 4 corals so the elevated levels piss everything off lol

Yeah thats true, my alk rests at about 9 even with the dkh of RSCP being 11+

I would consider my tanks fairly stocked now.

Leather, frogspawn, xenia, zoas, duncan, gsp, and rics in my 15g

Birdsnest, xenia, brain, lobo, leather, frogspawn, hammer in 10g

My alk was 8.5-9 but recently dropped to 7-8. Ca is 400/410, my mag 1200 is most common. Both tanks are fairly similar except the 10g maintains mag better.

I used to use RSCP and switched to blue bucket. The alk levels and mag levels were so high that it started to piss off my corals since I don't run a lot of SPS. The blue bucket has been great. Alk mixes at just under 9 and I have no problem keeping it there with dosing.

I use RSCP, and have since I started my tank. My alk sits at 7, calcium around 430. I don't test mag. It works good for me :)

same experience with me! Ever since I switched everything is much happier, I didn't have sps either

those levels sound good to me?

My ca and alk have been pretty stable since correcting my mag.

My mag was 1100 at one point which was causing a drop in ca and alk.

Mag could be higher and unfortunately drops with water changes so now I'm dosing every day.

If I can find a salt that will allow me to not have to dose daily, I think it would be better.

I am going to look into all the salts mentioned...the biggest pain is IO is readily available here where as other salt brands aren't. It sucks leaving ppl with very few options.

BRS has free shipping, even on salt!

The exchange rate is awful though. I try to avoid buying anything outside of Canada now. After a year, I finally found somewhere relatively local with RSCP :)

How many of you guys actually "Dry Mix" your salt before use? Might be a good idea to roll the bucket/barrel around a bit, or even shake it if its a small one to make sure things get blended properly.

I just changed fromy a 30 gallon to a 40b and changed from IO regular sea salt to red Sea coral pro and my corals were instantly happier and bigger than they have ever been. And during the move i pissed them off to high heaven and they were fully open and extended within an hour in the new salt.

I never use anything but RSCP and my spgr, Ca, and Mg are right on after a water change.

I don't mix by volume but use a postal scale and mix 5.8 oz of salt to a gallon of water and it comes out spot on to 1.025 whether I'm mixing one gallon or 5 gals.

Canadians must have lots of $$$ to shop online from the US. Some items can't be shipped.

International shipping is usually $40 us or more

Exchange rate

Additional 21% for duties. You pay your provincial tax and 7% duty

If you go with a broker add on to this by various ammounts.

I did find coral pro on Amazon.ca

It sounds like everyone has had really good experiences with the salts listed.

Since I always premix my dry salt- thats not the issue. Its the salt itself- 7mnths of use with crap results:(

Yeah I do as well, don't want to let things settle.

I probably used every salt brand out there thru the years and couldnt be more pleased with using red sea salt (not the pro)

I had a very hard time with my paremeters using the pro that mixes up at 11 dkh.I keep my salinity at 1.026 and my calcium reactor would be out of wack after every waterchange.since using the regular red sea salt I can keep my salinity at 1.026,my alkalinity at 8-9 dkh,my calcium at 440 ppm and my reactor has no problem after.and my corals never looked so good!not to mention the insane growth I'm getting.now I dose my tank with nitrates and the colors are insane (seachem flourish nitrogen )

Wow. Thank you all for all the info.

Really appreciate it.

It helps determine the next step...tired of testing mag so often and spending more on tests and dosers.

I've used RSCP for years and love it. Used Reef Crystals when I first started and once in a pinch. Not much of a comparison I guess. I like the #'s Red Sea mixes up to.

And it dissolves very well

I think red sea is the winner.

There are so many good reviews.

I don't see much difference in IO to IO reef crystals. The only difference was disolving/mixing time.

Down side- numbers aren't great and it leaves a gross brown film on the bucket which is the binding agent in the salt.
