Jebao CP-40 (Gyre 150 Clone)

I got a friend interested in reefing and he recently setup a tank and starting keeping simple fish and corals. He asked me what kind of power heads he should get and of course I suggested the Maxspect Gyre. I told him how good that pump is in moving water and creating flow and he agrees. He has seen my tank before and knows the flow he can achieve, but not everyone can spend a few hundred dollars in getting a pump. He went with the next best thing and got a Jebao cp-40 off of a China website. I was surprised he was able to get one since Ive heard Maxspect has been heavily monitoring the market and putting cease and desist orders to companies trying to come out with Gyre clones. With the Jebao coming at 4.5 times cheaper than the Gyre, The price is hard to beat

I got him to take a few pictures to do this review.

Anyone who used Jebao DC pumps before will be familar with his control unit

IMG-20160601-WA0013.jpg

Simple packaging, The unit itself is almost identical to the Gyre, but the the material used is of a lesser quality than Maxspect. Wonder how long this would last.

I think Jebao In order not to infringe on Maxpect's design, theyve angled the outlet vains slightly so theres a "design" change

IMG-20160601-WA0016.jpg

The impeller wheel. It seems there arent that many vains compared to the Maxpect Gyre.

IMG-20160601-WA0017.jpg

The pump installed in the tank, Another look at the controller, There are constant mode, wave mode, pulse mode and alternative mode. The knob controls the intensity

Another look of the pump in the tank

IMG-20160601-WA0007.jpg

Surface agitation. Seems like its pumping out good flow. Quite powerful for a 40W pump

IMG-20160601-WA0020.jpg

Heres a short video of the flow

Ill be interested in seeing how this pump performs in the long run. I hope it lasted longer than my WP pumps before.

I have both the CP-40 and CP-25 and they move a hell of a lot of water. The CP-40 has been in service for 6 months with no issues.

Nice review, I am running a Maxspect and so far, am very happy with it. However, I wouldn't mind a cheaper version for my display fuge or a second pump for the opposite side. Assuming they don't die after a year. My WP's became noisy after a year or two, and my RW 4 propeller wobbles around, they all still work though. Maybe these will be better since they are such a direct copy.

As far as buying these, they are all over ebay and amazon prime now. I am guessing the price will drop in time.

I've never had an issue with any of the Jebao products that I have and I have quite a few. 6 return pumps, 2 gyres and 8 of the WP series pumps (WP10 and WP 25) and a pair of the RW 25 pumps. I'm also running 6 of their dosers.

I had the RW-15 and RW-20 in my tank before and they both became audible after a few months of use. the RW-20 died within 6 months of use. They never synced up as advertised and support both in forums or from the manufacture is little to none.

Propeller powerheads doesnt need to be in sync and its best if they are in a random pattern, but its a different story for a gyre pump. It easily creates sandstorms and become too much flow even for SPS if you have 2 of them on either ends of the tank and they are out of sync. I have not checked out if the syncing functions on these pumps have improved, but if they havent, its a big enough reason for me not to get them and stuck with the controlability of the Maxspects

I liked my CP-40 but then someone (maybe maxspect lawyer now that I think about it?) who saw my review on YouTube offered well over what I paid to buy it from me w. overnight shipping.

In the shop we have two gyres running in a 5x2x2 tank and we will be using two CP40s in a 12x6x1 tank so hopefully I will be able to do a nice comparison later on.

I watched your positive review of the cp-40 and then all the sudden it was gone out of the tank.. I was like damn wonder why he got rid of it so quick. Makes sense now. The guys over at Maxspect I guess wanted to dissect it lol.

Maxspect is based in Taiwan, and Coralvue already had access to them by the time they trickled I to the states, they definitely didn't want them THAT bad lol

I was under the impression Maxspect is based in China, not Taiwan

They list their head office in China on their website, now if they manufacture in the same place, I haven't any idea.

But... But... Merica!!!

Seriously - neat review. I was happy with my RW-4, though if I could have afforded it I would have gone with ecotech simply for the space issue. I know there are lots of claims of problems, but I am interested to see what options people are using in Asia? Are they using jebao etc or are they forking over more money for the big names?

Theres a good mix of people using either name brand equipment or cheap imitation products that "gets the job done" in Hong Kong. I believe its the same everywhere else. If they have the means to purchase better equipment they will, if not, then cheaper alternative is used.

For me, it depends on the importance of the equipment. Ivs cheap out on return pumps, uv filters and dosing pumps and went to Jebao for all of them. They've performed flawlessly so far *touch wood* and Im really happy to have paid a fraction of the price for big name brands. Please where I dont think you should cheap out Ive opted for high end products from name brand manufactures like Maxspect for the lights and powerhead and Skimz for the skimmer. I consider them essential to a reef tank and have a piece of mind knowing they would perform as advertised and would not fail prematurely.

Following this topic, it is 2018 now, how are jebao's cp performing, I havent heard much again from the cps in these two years, they are harder to find than other jebao products, I've heard people saying they dtop working after 3 months, how are they measuring up? Somebody recommended icecap instead but Ive heard lots of complains about noise issues on the icecaps

I can tell you my 1 year old Gyre pump, while still working, has an almost dead display making it incredibly hard to program.

I'm on my 3rd jebao pump. The first lasted over a year, the second half that. I picked up a SW-2 recently and fully expect it to fail in the near term, if not I'll consider myself lucky.

I have the icecap 1k and it's not noisy at all FWIW.

I'm going to need a larger gyre on my new tank, but the maxspects are so expensive. Might be worth it to try these out and see how long they last.

All of mine are still plugging along. I've added 4 more CP-40s and 2 more CP-25 gyre generators. We also use Coralbox skimmers and they've also been flawless.  The DC900, DC700 and DC500 are whet we use, 2 of the DC700 and 2 of the DC500 are close to 4 years old.
