The filter I have is a Eheim 2215 canister filter with the bio media and the other media inside but I am thinking of selling my Eheim canister filter and just get a AC110 with some floss, carbon, purijen and phosguard in it due to the canister always giving me a hard time when I maintain it. So if I do that then do I need to add more live rocks for the biological filtration? since I only have about 20lbs live rock now and I m not gonna put any bio media in the ac 110. By the way I also gonna put 40lbs of live sand for the substrate. Link to comment
IronChefItaly Posted June 23, 2016 Share Posted June 23, 2016 You'll be definitely operating as a "minimalist" rock scape with less than half the recommended lbs. That being said, if you were to compare a 50 gallon tank with 50 lbs of lr versus a 100 gallon tank with 50 pounds of lr the 100 gallon would of course have a higher bio load capacity. Where the issue comes, is most people with minimalist scapes will load their system with fish solely considering the volume of the tank rather than the actual limiting factor of live rock. In your case, I'd consider running both the HOB and canister but keep only coarse bio media (like seachem matrix) within the canister - so long as no detritus builds in it you don't have to worry about it becoming a nitrate factory. dottybackss Posted June 24, 2016 Author Share Posted June 24, 2016 What about if I add until 40 lbs of live rocks plus a wave pump like Mp10 or Jebao RW8 for circulation? Do I have enough bio filtration to handle the system then ditch the canister? Link to comment
