i'm coming from high tech planted tanks. got itchy with a reef... I actually wanted to do reef prior to moving into the planted scene. scrapped the planted and replaced it with this.

thank you for the feedback.

I bought a large stock of rock, broke a lot down and glued it back together to something I wanted

back to the reef! does anyone have a solid suggestion on lighting? ideally, i would like this to be able to transfer into my ADA 75p (also 30 inches in length). the considerations have been thrown around between a nano box duo, or kessil a700.

It is the same as with planted tank, .......depends on what corals you want to keep

Lighting choices are how high you wanting the light to be,setting an the tank or suspend above the tank

Then comes prices, you can go name brand $$$ vs black box from eBay, DIY.

Lots of people use the Chinese black boxes.

LEDs work, but at the moment the trend is to go with hybrid of both

For me I would just go with T-5,

Just as with planted tanks everyone will what they think is best,

I like the above featured tank and their tank lighting , T-5

Good luck

  • 2 weeks later...

let the tank sit for 60 days in cycle. went to denver last week and came home itchy to add something to the tank. headed over to seaside and picked up my first coral addition! i also picked up 5 nassarius snails.

torch coral! hes about the size of a dime at the opening of his head.

when i first dipped and put him in the tank:

24 hours later:

i think he looks pretty happy? i had to adjust my flow because he spent 3 hours closed up until i dialed back a ton.

water params are as follows

as you can see the alk is little on the low side, what can i do to increase it? baking soda? since my calc is pretty firm at 420 i couldn't see my self starting a 2 part yet.

other suggestions?

edit: i'm using red sea coral pro salt

edit 2: i'm going to switch to reef crystals. i'll change water later this evening.

edit 3: ran the alk test again and got 6.4.
